Dolphin Friendly - Single/Video Review: Radical Desire

01 Sep 2022 // A review by Jack Grabham

And BOOM! Christchurch rock band Dolphin Friendly's new release Radical Desire is right up my street.

These guys have a pedigree on the live circuit, with festival appearances and support slots for a number of major Kiwi acts - and the streetwise a band can learn on the live circuit is very apparent here. With pinpoint production courtesy of Mako Road's Connor Jaine, we're treated to a thumping and pumping bottom end from an intensely in-tune rhythm section comprising bassist Thomas McHutchison and drummer Ben O'Carroll, which lays down the heartbeat for the compelling twin guitar attack of lead man Thomas Klever, and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Sam Mander. And what a riff!

We have rock, grunge, hip-hop, reggae, psychedelia, wrapped up in a powerful single that's led by a spine-tingling vocal delivery. Lyrically? You need to listen to what is delivered. Interesting, and well considered.

A really cool, energetic yet not complicated video which as a result enhances and doesn't clutter the song. Again the evidence of people who think about what they want to give you.

If you're a fan of the live scene, look out for Dolphin Friendly. They are seasoned. This song drips talent for what will go down well. This has a massive riff, and a beat you can stamp or clap to, or preferably just throw your hands skyward and rock! If you want to listen to it in the car, open the windows and turn the volume right up - but watch out for the accelerator getting away from you.

I'm adding this to my playlists. And remember, Hollywood's dream teens? Yesterday's trash queens.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )

About Dolphin Friendly

Hard-hitting rock group Dolphin Friendly unleash their new single Killing Silence on the 25th of November via the MEOW label. The Christchurch quartet have become a ground-breaking force on the New Zealand musical landscape, with this latest politically charged single set to take them to new heights.

Renowned for high energy, wild and engaging live performances, the band recently announced a run of headline single launch tour dates across the country, to compliment an already bumper summer schedule packed full of festival appearances.

Within two years of the band’s inception, they have charged the New Zealand music scene aggressively, having played some genuine feats such as Rhythm and Vines, Electric Avenue, Soundsplash, and opening for Kiwi and Aussie thumpers Shapeshifter, Lime Cordiale, Skegss, Bootleg Rascal, Jungle Giants, L.A.B and Mako Road.
