SNRXG - EP Review: True Story

06 Nov 2023 // A review by Cathy Elizabeth

Huntly born and raised artist SNRXG keeps the quality tracks coming with this 6-track EP True Story. Collaborating with top-notch local talent, the production on all of these tracks is mint. SNRXG exudes confidence and competence and deserves a lot more airtime for these efforts, hundred percent.

Venting is crisp, crunchy, and creative. Pouring out his heart and soul, grateful for the medium of music, for self-expression and soul-searching. The material is very relatable and has just the right vibe, for an easy and enjoyable listening experience. It’s tough but real, and heart-felt too.

Clever and punchy lyrics coupled with well-made beats, great delivery, and flurries of creative production value, all working together to keep the listener engaged throughout. Like the reverse snare hits on Outside. This music can easily stand alone, or alongside the quality of any other well-known artist, on any playlist, any day of the week.

The intro on Real Ones has a great impact; soulful and deep. Excellent use of vocal layering and delays. Shout out to Mr. X, Hy-Speed, Driiks, Outloc Da Don, and Tai Mataiti for the collabs on this dope track.

Beautiful piano on 10s Down, and a great message of independence and tenacity. It sounds or feels like maybe a child’s voice is in there somewhere, and this creates such a beautiful imagery of perhaps a father imparting wisdom to a son. Or the innocence of childhood up against the harsh realities of life. Finding a way to survive in this world but doing it with a joy and a positivity that allows one to stay vulnerable, while staying strong at the same time.

That’s the message I get from the whole EP actually. Keeping a soft heart in a hard world. It’s woven through the EP both musically and lyrically and it’s really well done. Well done to everyone involved in the creation of True Story. Don’t stop making music and keep calm and stay cool.

About SNRXG

Born & Raised in a small town in the Waikato region, Huntly a place known for its small features and historical figures. SNRXG first gained a passion for music at a early age when he was attending intermediate from freestyling for school friends and family. He liked listening to all types of genres but the one that stood out the most for him was "Hip - Hop Rap" such as the likes of Tupac, B.I.G, Nas, and also a few local NZ acts like Sid Diamond, Scribe and Deceptikonz. SNRXG was so influenced by the vocal lyricism capability that once he was able to obtain his own equipment he took that opportunity and crafted his own sound, this is when he started to distribute his music globally.

He is currently establishing his own label known as ST. Made Records NZ.
A Digital Distribution & Management Organisation founded in 2022.

Ha the Unclear - Album Review: A Kingdom In A Cul-De-Sac
25 Apr 2024 // by Cathy Elizabeth
If I could choose one word to sum up Ha The Unclear’s recent album release I would have to go with the word “inspiring”. And if I could throw a few more together in a kind of haphazard stream-of-consciousness way, I would add that A Kingdom In A Cul-De-Sac is oozing with creativity, quirky humour, plumbing the depths of musical understanding, and coming back up to the surface with a gift - permission to be one’s authentic self.

Phorrest - EP Review: On My Way
19 Sep 2023 // by Cathy Elizabeth
Tuning into the new EP from Auckland hip hop artist Phorrest, the intro track does well to set the scene for the rest of the EP. But wait, why is the title track of the EP in brackets and labeled Intro (On My Way!

day13n - Single Review: PA1N x SAG3
11 Jul 2023 // by Cathy Elizabeth
Listening to Day13n’s new single PA1N x SAG3 is the stuff of nightmares, with a dark and edgy musicality underpinning the intensely whisper-screamed lyrics. The song is divided into two halves, which nicely illustrates the forces of duality that are at play in the mind of the artist.

Will McClean - Single Review: Seem Alright
21 Jun 2023 // by Cathy Elizabeth
This week Will McClean releases Seem Alright, the second track from his upcoming album Don’t Forget To Breathe, alongside an accompanying video clip. Seem Alright is a punchy upbeat jazz-funk hip-hop track that has been nicely arranged, with a dash of clarinet, strings, and a sampled jazz vocal for the chorus.

Gig Review: Mel Parsons @ Meow, Wellington - 28/05/2023
30 May 2023 // by Cathy Elizabeth
It’s been a good while since I’ve been to a gig at Meow, Wellington, so the first thing I do is weave my way through the growing crowd to get a good look at the size and layout of the stage. It’s nicely raised and fairly spacious, more spacious than I remembered actually!

Loveta - Single Review: Take It Slow
08 May 2023 // by Cathy Elizabeth
Christchurch artist Loveta releases her first single for 2023 with the heart-wrenching rock ballad Take It Slow. The opening bars allow the listener to really immerse in the fullness of Loveta’s beautiful voice, with just the guitar for accompaniment, producing what I find to be a really quite distinctly kiwi sound.
