Isla - Single Review: Overthinking

15 May 2023 // A review by Liam Davis
In the uncertainty of the world around us; Isla brings us serenity.
The voice, the gentle strumming guitar, and calming hum of the bass feels peaceful but also bittersweet.

The track in question is Overthinking, wavers between picking up and refraining so as to not lull the listener into sleep, the drums are subtle but add persistent depth to these parts.

Lyrics reminiscent of mental health hit very close to home, and I'm certain many listeners can relate. It’s not buried in metaphors but rather very obvious and outgoing; which in my opinion is in and of itself - a metaphor for reaching out and talking about these things.

But I digress, as Isla's music is focused, precise, and mixed beautifully - with the vocals taking centrestage - and upon close listening there are layers of other instruments, plucked harmonics, and a nuance of ambiance that add quality to this work of art.

Isla has reminded me of the beauty of music and has presented this masterfully.

About Isla

Isla is a singer songwriter from Auckland. Her music is most often associated with the word "quirky" which she chooses to take as a compliment.

Isla's songs are mostly written mostly for the ukelele in a sort of "dear diary" format. Her biggest influences are Dodie, Flight of the Conchords, Kermit the frog and her dad.
