Yes i understand there is that word MAORI MUSIC although how many are actually into that "music" scene? i would like to know as i can write in either Maori or English.

Maori music can range and vary, like Hinewehi Mohi has the style of Techno Maori music , or close to. over all i just want to know what every one is intrested in.

Overall those that are Maori have,if they havent already found out,the greatest ability to sing dance and play instruments that they didnt even imagine they had the capabilities of aspiring to.
Yes!We have the talent. They are impressing me more and more every day with their sounds.
Thats all I can say about that right now!

Hey there,
I think that maori music is deifinitely getting more and more popular...But, there are still so many of us 'millenium maori's' (yes...I'm guilty!) as well as the general public of NZ that don't know that much of the language, so are instantly turned off when we hear it...HOWEVER...the best way to get it out there is to do it!!
Not only do you have this incredible talent to write music, but you can write it in more than one language!! In my personal opinion, the youth of NZ would be interested in music that's got both. Maybe mix it up a little...other NZ artists that have introduced a little of the maori language into their music are doing really well....as long as the music sounds good, things can only get better!!!!

I think kiwi's could only really get into the maori music if it was catchy, had sum funk to it and the hugest factor that will bring it down is its hard to enjoy sumthing if you dnt know what its about ... or what they are saying. But you never no aye ... Rammstien are going hard cuz ppl actually enjoy there songs in German. It might grow on us if its any good.

Yes i am understanding what you are saying:
if it is catchy and the music is composed extemly well it will be a hit to youth and if youth understand the concept of the song, although it is not the same when you are talking about songs that are catchy and are done in a different langauge. the one i am refering to is the that idian dude does in his langauge.

i am interested in any more ideas youth has about Maori music.
kia ora ano

Kia ora!! New material is on the way...

Tangiwai Volume 1 is very much on the move since it’s release on October 3rd, from reviews to TV exposure the response has been very positive, thanks again to our sponsors Ruia Mai and George Fm.

"...swish, sophisticated ambience..." - E.G, NZ Herald

“…a unique album totally in Te Reo” – New Zealand Woman’s Weekly

“…irresistible collection of stompin’ dance beats…” – Real Groove Magazine

Tangiwai: Vol 1 is in stores now, so go out and get yourself a copy, or order through www.gloubalroutes.co.nz

Look out for the Tangiwai promotional tour coming your way through January and February 2004.

Would someone be able to define exactly what makes music "Maori"? As white as I look I am part Maori (and welsh/yugoslav...hey I'm from the North!) and I create music. It does not have any Maori influences re: the language or traditional sounds, but it is music created by someone who identifies with the Maori people.

What I'm getting at for example is that if you are from the US and you are African-American and you make music you are immediately pigeon-holed as the "black musician". This seems to be regardless of whether the artist plays hip-hop or death metal.

Can I be a Maori artist even though I play goth music?

If you spoke and wrote words in Te Reo Maori and then maybe traslate them yeah that could be Maori music.

If you had some one singing in Te Reo well that is Maori Music,
Usually we talk about feelings and whakapapa (ancestral lines) and stories from our ancestors. We also talk about what is important to us as Maori people, such as our langauge, stories and the next generation.

i hope this helps, reply if it doesnt then i will try and define it more.

Maori music, a political tool?
I'm just wanting to gauge interest in a idea I have had for some time. Is anyone interested in forming a band with primarily political agenda and lyrics? I'm keen to hook up with a drummer, bassist who might want to collaborate on this project.
I would envisage that our lyrics would be predominantly in the reo and based around some of the issues raised by the media and other one eyed commentators on the state of Maori.

I used to play guitar professionally some years back and toured with several bands, so as you can guess I am not a young dude (Thirty eight Cool ) but am keen to get out and express my frustrations politically through music. I am a reo speaker but would not require others to be. My influences are fairly broad but am keen for any group formed to be fairly heavy (i.e. Metallica, Rage against the Machine etc) mostly cause I dig jamming like this now and am a sad old metal fan from way back Laughing .
I have spent some time in a kapa haka and am keen to integrate this into anything we do. I also play some traditional taonga puoro

Anyway let me know what you guys think e hoa ma.
