PRINS - Gig Review PRINS @ James Hay Theatre, Christchurch - 09/03/2024

10 Mar 2024 // A review by Thane Pullan

I last saw PRINS at a nightclub. The nightclub crowd was the typical demographic that I party with. This event was a bit different in terms of demographics.

I do like her style of music; she sounds like a pop star, which I appreciate. I feel that New Zealand is lacking in popstars. I think that she a distinct sound, in terms of the New Zealand scene. Lots of NZ singers are more acoustic sounding.

I liked the lights, there were three big ones. It was definitely low key compared to something like Major Laser. It was simple, but effective. She also had additional dancers for some songs. Two additional band members were on stage, I think the same ones as from the nightclub gig that I attended.

There were two additional acts before her, Christabel (winner of Popstars NZ) and Amber Carly Williams. I felt like they were over very quickly. The pacing of the music for both of these acts was slower. I have never really heard either of them prior. I thought that both were okay.

I did like the rhythm of the background music when there were no acts, too. It sounded like house. I don't think that I stumbled on those tracks before. It's possible I'm wrong.

Regarding PRINS' songs, I think that Something New has a nice tune to it, ditto with Follow Me. I like her voice being so prominent in 3AM, and that song has some nice electronic sounds to it. I also enjoy the increased speed of Savage in comparison to the other songs from PRINS.

The crowd seemed focused on PRINS, and the venue was pretty fill. I was at the back this time, and nothing was blocking my view of the stage throughout the event. I didn't notice many people leaving early. So, I think that this was a good show. It felt like a good progression from her nightclub show a year ago, the area was bigger. I am happy that PRINS is seeing success.

About PRINS

PRINS kicked off 2020 with a bang playing in The Edge NYE Festival in Hagley Park, Christchurch with a record audience of 22,000 people. Recently returning from Auckland where she played alongside International acts in Highlife’s sold out Sunsetters Festival, she’s gearing up for her much anticipated dance-pop EP which shows a brand new side to the PRINS we’ve already seen.

This Auckland born singer/songwriter, dancer, actor and model has spent the past few years establishing herself with live performance experience in New Zealand and has no intention of leaving the industry any time soon. A sultry powerhouse described as a mix between Duo Lipa and Amy Winehouse, PRINS is one to watch out for in 2020.

Ghost Score - EP Review: 00
11 Apr 2024 // by Thane Pullan
I found Ghost Score's new EP 00 to have a variety of sound. Even though, this was a four track EP, some of the tracks sounded quite different to each other.

Boardgames for Blondes - Album Review: On The Run
25 Feb 2024 // by Thane Pullan
I found the band Boardgames for Blondes to be a natural sounding band, as opposed to modern day electronic music. The majority of the lyrics are actually understandable, unlike some other modern pop songs out there.

03 Feb 2024 // by Thane Pullan
Ivy Christchurch show opened with Ragweed and closed with a DJ duo playing house tracks. Ragweed was more of a head bangy set.

Moofish - Album Review: Entropia
08 Dec 2023 // by Thane Pullan
The music that is on Moofish's newest album Entropia consists of slow songs. Honestly, I couldn't really understand most of the lyrics, but that is not rare with music these days.
