Alae - Single Review: Lucy
Following on from the success of their previous single Summer Thing, Indie Pop four piece Alae are back with Lucy, an infectious, groove-tinged pop tune that’s sure to get listeners through the dreary winter.
Lucy is the work of vocalist Alex Farrell-Davey and Dunedin musician Max Gunn (formerly of The Shambles) The pair met at an Auckland Song Hubs session in 2019. "Our styles and direction meshed way better than we could have ever thought..." Alex says. "He's responsible for the beautiful keys and sassy harmonies you hear in the track..."
Alex’s gravely yet smooth vocals ease the listener in and make way for a bright and infectious chorus. A cheeky homage to The Beatles, the chorus is filled with Alex’s soaring falsetto - “Lucy’s in the sky, she don’t need no diamonds.” Highlights for me include the bridge, with beautiful rich harmonies that build into the final chorus, which in turn is filled with a whirlwind of harmonies that support Alex's vocals perfectly. Undeniably catchy, Lucy is sure to be cemented in listeners heads before too long.
The single is accompanied by an eye-catching, colourful music video created by Auckland based visual artist Mardo El-Noor. Reminiscent of the Pop-Art style, the video is trippy and captures the essence of Lucy perfectly. I recommend watching to get the full Lucy experience that the band has intended.
