Skinny Hobos - Gig Review: Skinny Hobos @ Valhalla, Wellington - 19/01/2019

22 Jan 2019 // A review by tonymcdonald

One of Wellington's last great venues was kicking out rock odour once more as the Skinny Hobos took to the stage. It's 10:45pm and the murky undertones of Valhalla were ringing out in the streets before I even entered the venue.

A blue neon haze lit the stage as Alex's signature bandana restrained the sweat from pouring into his eyes on this sticky night.

The dance floor was creaking at the seams as the tribal drumming and infectious guitar riffs kicked in.

This is my first time watching the Skinny Hobos and I was very surprised that the lack of a bass player wasn't obvious at all. I then saw Alex's pedal board and lost count after 10, wow!!

"It's all about the cow bell" as the words "You got to take your pills" screeched out. The power, passion and noise from just two people is mind blowing.

So hot and sweaty, lead singer Alex frees a fan and points it on himself as Texas pounded away undeterred although he did remove his shirt after the second song.

Some elderly female member of the audience in an embarrassing gypsy looking mermaid costume decided to throw herself onto the stage over the railway sleepers. Where are the bouncers, get her out!

The songs are great and you can instantly feel your body wanting to dance. Check them out when they are next in your town and if you haven't already tune in here.

About Skinny Hobos

Skinny Hobos are a 2-piece Alternative Rock band from Auckland, New Zealand who make far more noise than any two people should!

The Hobos have quickly earned a reputation for being the hardest working band in town. In 2015, they played more shows than there were weeks in the year, as well as recording their debut album at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios with engineer Nick Poortman (Ekko Park, Jason Kerrison).

They finished off the year with a very successful co-headlined North Island tour with Wellington band Bakers Eddy, and they were also featured in the December/January issue of NZ Musician Magazine.

In the sweaty snake pit that is Valhalla I was ordering a Fireball when two feet appeared next to me at the bar. Looking up I discover it’s the one and only Jared from Dead Favours.

27 Feb 2021 // by tonymcdonald
New Zealand’s very own Blink 182, Elemeno P, with support from Fruit Juice Parade and Valentina hit San Fran, on a fantastic warm Wellington evening. It was packed out; beers were flowing, and the sticky smell of the low-ceilinged venue was absolutely buzzing.

Even during a period of uncertainty in New Zealand with Covid-19, Devilskin and support act Shepherds Reign managed to fill San Francisco Bath House in Wellington. In fact, I have not seen a queue outside on the street for quite some time.
