On The Radio
The official June quarter local content figures are in. New Zealand music content on commercial radio in the three months to 30 June was 17.02% and the 2012 calendar year-to-date is now 17.93%. It's not a pretty picture: the lowest quarterly result in eight years. Part of the reason (but not the only reason) is the change of format at Kiwi FM, from a 100% New Zealand music playlist to a 60% local playlist.
The songs that contributed most to the 17.02% in the June quarter were Stan Walker's Music Won't Break Your Heart, the debut single from EMI's new signing, Jamie McDell (pictured) called You'll Never Take That Away From Me and Six60 with Forever.

At the end of May, a new NZ On Air-funded New Zealand music website called theaudience launched. theaudience is a new music discovery site that is a partnership between NZ On Air and Amplifier. After two months, more than 500 New Zealand artists are using the site, more than a thousand (mainly unreleased) songs have been uploaded and 100,000+ visitors have roamed the site. Each month, the unreleased song that is the most popular ontheaudience goes forward for Making Tracks funding. The winner of the first "wild card" Making Tracks grant, based on activity on the site in the month of June, was Watercolours with her song Night Swimmer and the winner of the July people's choice was Lisa Crawley with her song, What Would I Give.
Making More Tracks
We have now completed the inaugural Making Tracks year. In the first year of the new NZ On Air music funding scheme, we took in 1,216 applications and we made 321 grants. We have now nearly completed our promised first year in review.
The review is being conducted in two parts.
Firstly, we're looking at how it works, tightening the eligibility criteria, refining the applications and decision-making processes to help applicants and streamlining administration.
Secondly we're looking at what has resulted - we are pinning down airplay achieved on radio, on television and online, and are quantifying the audience reached.
Topline results will be available by the end of August.
Showcasing New Artists and New Music
We are back in the showcase saddle. It's been about 18 months since our last new music showcase for radio, but this year we have three planned. The first was at Back Beat in Auckland on Wednesday 25 July. It featured four acts with new Making Tracks-funded songs going to radio now - Jamie McDell whose second single,Rewind, is the lead track on Kiwi Hit Disc 151, The Jupiter Project whose video forHook Up Girl picked up 121,000 You Tube hits in its first 2 days online, The Wyld (pictured) who are a new Dryden Street project and Goodshirt who are back!
Congratulations to...
Opossom, Lydia Cole, Annah Mac (pictured) and Lips for making the shortlist for the prestigious 2012 APRA Silver Scroll with their NZ On Air-funded songs, Getaway Tonight, Hibernate, Girl In Stilettos and Everything To Me.
The annual music awards season is upon us. The APRA Silver Scroll takes place in Auckland on Thursday 13 September.
The next day, it is the 2012 Waiata Maori Awards in Hastings where the NZ On Air Radio Airplay Award and the new NZ On Air Best Music Video Award will be presented.
Finalists for the 2012 Vodafone NZ Music Awards will be announced on 03 October with the NZ Music Awards Critics Choice two weeks later on 17 October. And then it's the big one - the Vodafone NZ Music Awards at the Vector Arena in Auckland on Thursday 01 November.
In Australia
NZ On Air may have pulled out of promoting music in Australia but New Zealand music is still there.
The NZ Music Commission is presenting a very cool New Zealand music showcase at the annual Big Sound music festival in Brisbane in September.
The showcase will feature Eden Mulholland (ex-Motocade), Tom Lark, The Transistors, Cairo Knife Fight, and Sola Rosa.
If you are in Brisbane on Wednesday 12 September at 5.00pm, take a trip down Bakery Lane.
Sound Advice
Have you seen the Sound Advice interviews being published on the Making Tracks Kiwihits website? They are a series of industry perspectives on making and marketing music. Previous interviewees are David Ridler, the former NZ On Air Assistant Music Manager who is now at The Radio Network, and Matt Coleman, head of Music Management Agency "Let The People Speak".
