School For Birds

Bio

School for Birds, formally known as Exiles, is Sean Sturm and Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper ... and a flock of flying machines. They released 2 singles as Exiles to great success in 2007-08, both featuring vids from Luke Sharpe.

They departed for foreign climes a few cold years ago to make music but now return with gifts in tow: songs of love and transformation; of men, women and machines. Their music spans worlds — and genres — with ease; “nothing ever really dies.”

Both have distinguished pedigrees in music. Sean founded and wrote the songs for the Nixons and Eye TV, who hit the mainstream with One Day Ahead, which featured on Nature’s Best and was a finalist for the APRA Silver Scrolls. Today, as well as being part of School for Birds, he teaches at the University of Auckland (don’t ask him what).

Mahuia M(Mus) studied violin at Otago University and the Sydney Conservatorium. He has played and written string arrangements for many local artists from Brooke Fraser to Lawrence Arabia. Currently, he writes and produces music for TV and film for Franklin Road. He and Sean met via Karl Steven (Supergroove), who knew them to be fellow pop nerds; the rest is history.
