Thirsty? How about some more…
Posted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 8:51 pm
The search for New Zealand’s finest DJ/producer has begun for 2005. Thirst, Heineken Music’s global DJ search, hits 35 countries worldwide to find the freshest emerging local talent and offers them a chance to perform on the world stage with the world’s best DJ’s.

Now in its third year, Thirst continues to grow and expand in size and stature. Each country participating must hold a national competition before sending their winner to compete internationally. For New Zealand, this means holding four regional finals in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown followed by a finals night in Auckland and one hell of a party with international superstar Roger Sanchez.

The New Zealand 2005 Thirst winner not only claims $5,000 studio time or equipment and be the guest DJ at Thirst Australia, but also represent New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Thirst Regional Finals. From here, if successful, they can make it to the World Thirst finals, where DJs vie for the ultimate prize: a one year contract with Thirst and to go on a global tour.

Thirst is open to anyone, from bedroom DJs to those with more depth of experience. The Thirst judges are looking for talented DJ producers who can provide that little bit extra, both in production and performing. Each entrants needs to produce their own original track as well as be prepared to play a 15 minute set should they make it through to the finals.

This years judges form an impressive, respected and diverse line-up. The three judges selected to preside over the entire national competition are Brock Oliver, Editor of NZ music bible REAL GROOVE, Luke ‘Da Spook’ Thompson & Gareth Farry, founder of the Aoteroa Urban Soul Label, Sugarlicks Records.

All entrants will compete in their own regional competitions judged by Oliver, Thompson and Farry with additional local judges. The winners from each region will then compete in the national final in Auckland judged by the threesome with the help of local legend Manuel Bundy and the Thirst touring international DJ, Roger Sanchez.

Judges criteria includes the track being judged on originality, arrangement and its potential to reach a global audience, while the set is judged on mixing skills, flair and personality as well as the ability to interact with the crowd.

The judges are also looking for that little bit extra – and that’s open to interpretation. Lyrics, instruments and live elements are some sure-fire ways to impress.

Thirst is an international competition that tours over thirty countries around the world with some of the most prominent and respected DJ’s and producers in the industry. This is your opportunity to be part of this, so make sure you get your entry in by Friday 18th March 2005. Watch out for CD Rom entry forms or check out www.heinekenmusic.co.nz for more information.

NZ Welcomes Back Erick Morillo After a Decade

Heineken Music has today announced that Erick Morillo will join Superstar DJ Roger Sanchez in headlining this year’s Thirst event. The Latino is one of the world’s best DJ/producers having worked with the likes of Puff Daddy and Boy George and remixed everyone from Whitney Houston to Basement Jaxx and Macy Gray.

Morillo’s first visit to New Zealand in over a decade sees him play at this year’s Thirst final at Auckland’s St James complex on the 22nd of April

Not only is Morillo currently one of the most in demand DJs in the world but he’s also a famed TV presenter and business man. MTV made use of Erick Morillo’s good looks and exuberant presenting skills having him host specials in Miami and Ibiza as well as standing in for presenters. He is also the mastermind behind the successful Subliminal Records – a label that has become synonymous with a funky soulful sound.

Heineken Brand Manager Liz Parker says with Morillo and Sanchez headlining, the Thirst final will definitely be a memorable experience. “Morillo and Sanchez will give clubbers a night to remember and our Thirst finalists will be delighted to share the stage with them.”

For the finalists an impressive prize pack is up for grabs including a $5,000 in equipment or studio time, a guest DJ spot at the Thirst Australia finals and the awesome opportunity to represent New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Thirst Regional finals, where DJs vie for entry into the Thirst Global final, equipment from Pioneer and international media attention.

Entries are open until March 18th with regional finals being held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown in early April.

Thirst is Heineken Music’s ongoing quest for the world’s freshest talent. It’s about selecting the best emerging local talent and offering them the chance to perform with the world’s best. Now in its third year, Thirst has already hit 35 countries playing to over 100,000 clubbers worldwide.

In New Zealand, 100 DJ/producers have been involved in the last two years with competitors, finalists and winners all saying they’ve gained from the experience. Both 2003 winner Javed Haider and 2004 winner Matt Harris have made the most of their prizes and they have also benefited from the chance to compete internationally. Heineken Music continues to offer them support and assistance and is looking forward to working with this year’s national Thirst winner.
