New course to boost creative/music industry sector

Tai Poutini Polytechnic will be delivering a new programme at the Music and Audio Institute of NZ (mainz) Auckland Campus from July 2006.

The Diploma in Creative Enterprise is designed to assist graduates to develop a sustainable career in the music industry or other creative areas through establishing and maintaining a successful small business.

International and New Zealand based research supports the view that many emerging musicians trying to get their careers off the ground are predominantly self-managing. Also, that while they have the creative talent they often lack some of the business skills and the resources to move from project to project without having to resort to financial assistance from somewhere like WINZ.

The Diploma in Creative Enterprise has been developed to help people wishing to establish a business in the music industry like a band, recording studio or a PA company. It is designed to provide the usual MAINZ balance of theoretical and practical elements to help students move their careers forward and involves practical business skills, networking and mentoring by current industry experts.

The programme will provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to develop a sound business plan and establish their own business through
implementation of the plan. In addition, graduates will have developed a range of business capabilities, including skills in management, communication and administration.
