The ol' rap & hip hop argument
Posted: Fri Jun 10, 2005 9:44 am
No one is ever going to see eye to eye on this issue... but it is certainly one that draws all the creatures out from the woodwork.

Grim, seems you have a great deal of angst toward hip hop. I suggest you let it go, because hip hop is an artform, a musical/cultural and valid one in today's market.

Just because it uses looped drum rhythms/melodies etc. doesn't mean it is any less valid than another genre which uses "live" instruments. How you can criticise a poster in another thread for siding with hip hop and say "don't call yourself an artist" is without base... everyone that engages in some form of music playing, production, performing can call themselves an artist... it's not genre specific or dependent on your level of skill.

Being an artist myself who has spent well over a 20 years learning a number of instruments, your comments deriding hip hop and trying to spill the virtues of metal just show you up as, well, an angry metaller, rather than an enlightened musician.

In a simplistic sense, hip hop has rhythm, has tune, can get your finger tapping and you can hum or repeat the rap in your head, I would argue this is enough to be able to call it music.

Open your mind mate, no need to be so angry.

And as for Team America, sheep comments etc. Try and stick to the topic rather than pull in some lame and overly used retort that frankly was past it’s used by date many decades ago.

I’m sure many here have the mental capacity for intelligent debate and would welcome it rather than have some American deride our country with a useless comment such as “your country is worthless in the entertainment field.” Are we supposed to say thank you for: The Apprentice, Survivor, Ashlee Simpson, Sum 41, Blink 182, Mase, The Jessica Simpson show, Arnie Swartz as governor of California, your country’s over zealous pursuit of celebrity and of course there’s always those various wars your benevolent leader seems to enjoy starting.

As you said “especially since your arguments are generalisations”, one could argue you’re heading that way with your comments about our fair land.

I side with you on hip hop, but let’s not be throwing mud at countries.

strange that you say "open your mind" and then go on to bash America, followed by "let's not be throwing mud at other countries". You only name some of the bad music that they have, but isn't there just as much good music?
