G-TARanaki - The Checks Interview

20 Jul 2010 // An interview by Shade
What can we expect to see from The Checks over the next year?

A brand new album.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Don't get wrapped up in the hype, just keep writing songs the whole and practice your instruments all the time. Don't listen to cynical old twits either.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

Western Springs stadium

What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

Heaps of friends write great stuff that only a few people hear and I think that everyone should. Fans and people that buy albums sometimes don't realize the scope and depth of an artist maybe I'll find a way to get all of the random stuff out.

What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?

When my guitar made zero sound first song at ASB stadium in Wellington opening for AC/DC and I was stranded on stage needing to play something epic with no sound coming out, very embarrassing in front of AC/DC fans.

What is your favourite place in NZ to be?

Pakiri beach

What inspired you to become a start The Checks?

Ed Knolwes

What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?

Too many to say bur recently at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney we all had a great show.

What rumour would you like to start about The Checks?

That Josh Homme asked me for guitar lessons.

About The Checks

The Checks' brand of blues-driven, jazzed-up, high-energy, raw, soul madness has seen the young band sell out venues that are packed to the rafters with dance-crazed punters.

In January 2003, Embraced by student radio, the five teenagers from Auckland’s Devonport first performed at a friend's birthday party. The set consisted of an eclectic mix of cover songs.

March 2003: Buoyed by the enthusiastic response to their first ever performance, the lads decide to enter the school music competition, and proceed to rock the house. Despite having the crowd on their side, they come second to the only band that played an original song; a lesson that may eventually benefit all lovers of guitar driven rock music, as the lads go home and write their first ever self written song 'The Creek'.
