The Black Seeds - On the Sun Album Review
08 Feb 2004 // review by Shade
By RUSSELL BAILLIE (Herald rating: * * *) It is a backhand compliment, but the Black Seeds - another outfit from Wellington supporting the theory that every second flat in Newtown comes with its own brass section - are a goodtime kind of band. That's certainly reinforced by their second album, On The Sun, a crisp, catchy, if slightly mannered collection of dub-funk with an icing of sweet pop tunes.

Fang - Somewhere Out There Album Review

Thanks to the NZ Herald for this review:Their frothy, fuzzy debut pegged Auckland outfit Fang as indie-rock also-rans. Rhombus - Bass Player Album Review
30 Nov -0001 // review by Shade
Thanks to the NZ Herald for this review:Yet another album from the seemingly interconnected Wellington dance/dub/hip-hop scene, the debut effort from Rhombus has frequent moments where the blend of beats, bass and voices achieves lift-off. That includes the opener Onward (a propulsive piece of rap-reggae with hints of the Stereo MC's and Bob Marley's Exodus), the single Clav Dub (a brassy, summery blast reminiscent of Salmonella Dub and not just because is has that band's Tiki Taane as guest vocalist), Tour of Outer Space (a slow-loping number, which care of Raashi Malik's graceful vocal suggests Sade in a different orbit) and Dead and Gone (Malik again whispering over a house-throb).
