Church & AP's highly-anticipated debut album Teeth is here. Released less than 12 months on from their breakout single Ready or Not, the 10-track album showcases the duo's progression and inimitable lyrical style, alongside beats by talented producer Dera Meelan. Today's release offers fans seven new tracks, following the release of album tracks Dandelion, Roulette and Hello Hello in recent months.
The creation of Teeth was driven by an ambition to make innovative New Zealand hip hop. The album contains many references to their lives a teenagers in Auckland, with the autobiographical album closer Chrysalis telling the story of Church & AP from day one.
Church says that while they've worked to create their own unique sound, there are many influences from musicians past and present.
"Personally, I took a lot of inspiration from early Neptunes. Kelis, N.E.R.D, Clipse, etc. Also more modern voices like Kah-Lo, XanMan and Shiraz. Track 8 is actually named after Shiraz. There’s myriad influences for Teeth. So I think each individual will find something unique in it."
He says releasing a debut album is like buying your girlfriend a birthday present. "You think she’ll like it... I mean you hope to God she’ll like it. But at the end of the day all you can is hope. BUT the more effort you put into it, the better your chances are. And I know we put a lot of effort into this."
Church & AP's Teeth is out today on streaming services on their own collective YKK and via Kartel Music. A limited run of vinyl is set to be released this summer.
Church & AP will play an album release show tonight at Galatos. Pre-sales are available at galatos.co.nz, with tickets on the door on the night.
