Greg Johnson

Bio

While many musical fashions and styles have come and gone over the last 30 years, Greg Johnson has consistently maintained a unique style and place in the music world. Quintessentially New Zealand but also universal by nature, his sound and lyrics are both deeply personal while maintaining a broad appeal to his many listeners.

His catalogue of over 300 songs includes many Kiwi classics such as Isabelle, Don’t Wait Another Day, Swagger and Now The Sun is Out with several becoming radio hits in New Zealand and the US.

His 11th studio album Swing The Lantern is a return to the style of production employed on earlier albums, where a band of players get together over several weeks to record the songs in a big studio all at once. The result captures the interactive nuances between players, the mood representing a moment in time - much like the perfect live concert.

Longtime friend, drummer and musical collaborator Wayne Bell produced the album, which was recorded at Stagg Street Studios in Los Angeles in June of 2015. Seasoned cohorts Ted Brown and Mark Hughes were joined by Welshman, Alex Troup on guitar and Bell on drums.

Songs from the album were written in the year prior to recording and many were road tested at Greg’s various shows during that time, a tried and true indication of what works and what doesn’t.

The result is without doubt the best of Johnson’s studio efforts to date but more importantly, the songs have already been judged as among his strongest by his hardcore fan base.

Posted: Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:21 pm

Seven Day Cure is just what the doctor ordered! It is full of gems featuring Greg’s insightful song writing – It is a quintessential Greg Johnson record.

Greg says “this album has taken twice as long as any previous to make simply because of the additional attention to detail and tweaking that's been going on... it is sounding stunning, the production is not only world-class but probably better than most Alien Civilizations could manage as well, certainly better than anything done by the Martian Landers.”

July sees Greg's return to New Zealand after this year's International Festival sell-out sensation. The charming lad is joined by equally amiable fellow musicians Ted Brown, Mark Hughes and of course, the indispensable Wayne Bell.

The tour starts with two nights at Bar Bodega – this Sun 18th July and Mon 19th July with a two hour show that features material from his acclaimed new Album 'Here Comes The Caviar' and of course, all our old favourites. For all the dates, scroll on down.

"Johnson serves up ten melodic winners with a wistful yet optimistic attitude." PopMatters New York

But the shows don’t stop at Wellington. Greg is doing 9 shows only before he returns to Venice Beach, - his home away from home for the last couple of years. His warm songs and intimate style have secured him as one of New Zealand's favourite artists and Greg has quite deservedly earned the reputation as one of our most prolific and talented songwriters.

"He can make an audience laugh and cry within a matter of seconds..." Listener 2003

Greg Johnson's US Label In Trouble
Posted: Thu May 22, 2003 11:48 am
Greg Johnson has completed his 4-track EP under his deal with Santa Monica based Immergent Records just in time!

The label's parent company, 5.1 Entertainment, has reportedly struck hard times and has decided to get out of the 'pop-rock' music line, dropping Greg and four other recently signed artists.

"For a midsize indie label, the swing was just too wide on how much money you have to spend to get that elusive pop/rock hit," says 5.1 Chairman John Trickett.

Greg's manager Michelle Bakker says that while it is certainly an inconvenience, the timing may be fortuitous. "The deal has really worked well to this point because it allowed Greg to get his feet in the soil here in the US, and witha growing fan base and a beautiful new EP, negotiations for another label are going very well, helped along by the fact that we are placing his songs easily into American TV and film."

Greg and guitarist Ted Brown will be back briefly in Auckland to play the Coast Bar on July 31 and August 1 before returning to the US.
