Salmonella Dub

Bio

Salmonella Dub’s auspicious 7th studio album, the incredibly dynamic Freak Controller graced record store shelves and the dub world in November 2009 and Freak Controller Madness was released in 2010.

Formed more than twenty years ago in Christchurch, Salmonella Dub have rightfully been called the pioneers and originators of a unique Pacific style of Dub/Drum n Bass/Reggae/Hip Hop and Groove based Rock. Acts such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Scribe and P-Money, Shapeshifter, Cornerstone Roots, Kora, King Kapisi as well as the new wave of Australian acts like Budspells, Rastawookie, King Tide, Red Eyes, and the likes, can all thank Salmonella Dub for paving the way to opening Australian ears to an alternative to a music scene that was largely house influenced dance music or straight guitar rock.

Band Members:
Andrew Penman (guitar, keyboards)
David Deakins (vocals, drums)
Mark Tyler (bass)
Pete (trumpet, trombone)

Posted: Mon Jul 27, 2009 6:56 pm
Have you seen something FREAKY?
Did you catch it on camera?

Salmonella Dub and Myspace are asking you to submit footage for their next music video for Freak Local, their new single from their Ep with the same title. What they are looking for is 5-10 second clips of FREAKINESS!

Freak Local is an anthem to the New Zealand individuals who refuse to conform. Every village, town and city has freaky characters and, as Andrew Penman from the band will attest, they can often be found still at the bar after the band has left the stage; “They are often the characters you remember and bump into again and again. It’s their stories and perspective on life that create the back bone of New Zealand”.

What we want you to do is capture this freakiness on camera, and send it in to us. Salmonella Dub will then view the footage and decide who will be chosen to feature in their next video. There will also be prizes for the Top Two freakiest videos. First prize will be $500.00 cash plus a complete set of Salmonella Dub CDs valued at $300.00 (Total prize value $800). The runner up prizes will be a complete sets of Salmonella Dub CDs valued at $300.

The competition starts on the 29th July, and will run for two weeks. So get out there, capture some crazy stuff, and upload it to www.myspace.com/officialsalmonelladub and you could see your masterpiece on all great music TV stations around the country!

There are specifications for the size of the clips, so to save confusion and heartbreak, please make sure you read the Terms & Conditions.

So start filming something crazy today, and from the 29th July 2009 go to www.myspace.com/officialsalmonelladub and start uploading so you can be in to win!

Feel the Seasons Change
Posted: Fri Sep 26, 2008 4:52 pm
Virgin/EMI Music New Zealand are proud to announce the release of Feel The Seasons Change – a live album from Salmonella Dub and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

In February this year Salmonella Dub, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and guests collaborated for the Feel The Seasons Change tour of New Zealand. The tour has now been immortalised through the release of a live album of the same name.

The shows combined Salmonella Dub’s contemporary music and production values with elements of te reo Maori, the ancient arts of taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments) and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s classical tradition.

The collaboration was graced with three special guests: acclaimed te reo singer Whirimako Black, taonga puoro expert Richard Nunns, and leading electronic musician Paddy Free of Pitch Black; all woven together by noted Christchurch arranger and composer Tom Rainey and conductor Hamish Mckeich.

Material for Feel The Seasons Change was largely drawn from Salmonella Dub’s most recent album Heal Me, as well as classics from their extensive back catalogue. It also drew on excerpts of tracks from Paddy Free and Richard Nunn's new album Karekare: Te Reo O Te Whenua, and orchestral arrangements including new works composed by Tom Rainey. Rainey took a ground-up collaborative approach to the arrangements, making the NZSO an integral part of the music to create a unified sound scape, rather than just bolstering the performances as a ‘backing group’.

Feel The Seasons Change is more than just a live album - it is an historic document showcasing the coming of age of a distinctive contemporary Aotearoa musical voice. The album boldly melds together the colonial culture of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with the ancient taonga puoro and te reo through the medium of the dub-rock ethics of Salmonella Dub, the ethereal electronica of Paddy Free, interspersed with the magical vocals of Whirimako Black.

Feel The Seasons Change captures the Auckland and Christchurch performances and is on sale now. It is available as a limited collector’s edition double CD/DVD set with slideshows featuring the tracks For The Love Of It and Tui Dub and is also available as a CD-only version, and as double 12” vinyl.

Salmonella Dub & NSZO Live Album

SALMONELLA DUB
& New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

Live album: Feel The Seasons Change

In February of this year, Salmonella Dub and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra united for the 'Feel The Seasons Change' tour, with shows performed in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Nelson. This tour will now be immortalised through the release of a live album in September.

'Feel The Seasons Change' combines Salmonella Dub’s contemporary music and production values with Te Reo Maori, the ancient arts of taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments), and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s classical tradition.

The project was graced by special guest performances in the form of the superlative voice of acclaimed Te Reo singer Whirimako Black; the haunting sounds of renowned taonga puoro expert Richard Nunns; and leading electronic musician Paddy Free of Pitch Black.

The concept behind 'Feel The Seasons Change' is a three-part audiovisual exploration, weaving together Aotearoa’s historical and modern cultural worlds in a journey towards healing and celebration. The story is told through live renditions of compositions chosen from Salmonella Dub’s recent album 'Heal Me' and their extensive back catalogue.

Noted Christchurch arranger Tom Rainey took a ‘ground-up’ collaborative approach to the arrangements, making the NZSO an integral part of the music to create a unified sound scape, rather than just bolstering the performances as a ‘backing group’.

The 'Feel The Seasons Change' album captures the live performance at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on the 1st February 2008, and will be released through Virgin Music on Monday 22nd September.

Salmonella Dub New Album Released
Posted: Mon Sep 3, 2007 4:44 pm
Virgin Music announce the release of Salmonella Dub’s new album Heal Me, released today.

Heal Me was recorded in the band’s self-built Hapuku studio in Kaikoura over 2006 and 2007, and was produced and co-arranged by David Harrow in his Workhouse studio in Los Angeles. David Harrow, famous for his production work with Adrian Sherwood's ONU Sound label has previously worked with Salmonella Dub on their THC Winter, Calming of the Drunken Monkey and Killervision releases.

Heal Me is an 11-track vocally lush, musically seamless, horn-laden, long player featuring the bands hallmark heavy rhythm section layered with familiar Salmonella Dub psychedelic colourings. Although deeply rich in dub texturing, Heal Me is different from previous Salmonella Dub releases in that it is the band’s first fully developed vocal album. Tracks like Gifts and Love Sunshine and Happiness are traditional in the bands heavy rock steady dub & reggae styles. Others like That Easy, Rong and Lightning are steeped in dub-rock, harking back to the bands roots. Nothing is Free is the heaviest of the dub tracks, while the title track Heal Me is unashamedly 80's in its funk influences.

The CD version of the album has been released with a limited-run premium disc containing four alternative album track mixes, plus a slide show of studio antics. The digital release of the album through iTunes comes with an exclusive version of the bands recent cover of the Stranglers track Peaches. The digital release through Vodafone contains an exclusive ambient acappella version of Nothing is Free.

It is four years since Salmonella Dub released their last album proper, the multi platinum selling One Drop East. Since 2003 the band have played over 300 shows across ten countries. And so it was in 2006 after an exhausting 24 date tour across Australia, the UK and Ireland that the band finally vowed to circle the wagons and put their own creativity first by hunkering down to focus on their Kaikoura studio and their next album. The first result in this creative process is their 6th album proper Heal Me.

Salmonella Dub - Remixes and Radio Cuts

Salmonella Dub - Remixes and Radio Cuts:
An Aotearoa Anthology of 200 Years Escapism from Industrial Revolution

RELEASE DATE: MONDAY APRIL 3

Salmonella Dub announces the release of their Remixes and Radio Cuts CD/DVD compilation.

The band reversed the migration trends of their colonial whakapapa in 2005 when they toured the UK and Ireland for the third time to release their UK-exclusive double CD/DVD, cheekily entitled Remixes and Radio Cuts: An Aotearoa Anthology of 200 Years Escapism From Industrial Revolution.

Remixes and Radio Cuts is now available in Aotearoa via the band’s own Dub Conspiracy label/production house which also released last year’s Dub Conspiracy and Kaikoura Roots Festival 05 compilations.

This release features One Drop North, a documentary of their 2004 sell-out tour of Europe (17 shows across eight countries in 21 days!), which screened here last year on TV1; six of their most recent video clips, including Nu Steppa, Slide, Ez On, Dancehall Girl, Longtime and a video remix of Nu Steppa; plus a photo slide show of spectacular South Island landscapes.

The 14-track CD compilation is a combination of previously released remixes and radio edits, selected from across the band’s full catalogue. Remixers include the likes of Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, David Harrow, Concord Dawn, Mu, Groove Corporation and the Sativa Records crew.

The track-list was selected to invoke the metaphoric journey of the bands’ colonial whakapapa from industrial Britain through to modern Aotearoa.

The story begins with Conspiracy Dub, Drifting and Push On Thru, expressing the first wave of colonial desire to escape from the conspiracy of the upper classes industrial revolution.

The second chapter starts with Savage, an expression of the hardship of survival in Aotearoa in the 1840s, quickly flowing into the love for a new life and land with For The Love Of It, Tui Dub and Outdoor Stylez.

The third chapter moves into the contemporary world. Dreadzone remixes Wytaliba, a track originally featuring samples recorded during a police search, (“we got no warrant”), while Ez On is reworked by Concord Dawn. Th Bromley East Roller illustrates Tiki Taane’s experiences growing up in the industrial suburb of Bromley in parochial 1980s Christchurch. The Ipswich-based Sativa Records crew reworks Longtime.

The final chapter in this selection features the track Platetectonics “lets mash up material world...he who seeks only vanity with no love for humanity will fade away” remixed by Birmingham’s Groove Corp. Mercy “where’s the love” is remixed by Mu from Fat Freddy’s Drop, and lastly Orbital from the band’s1994 debut album completes the cycle.

Remixes and Radio Cuts is on sale Monday April 3.

Check website for dates and venues of Salmonella Dub’s Aotearoa Provincial Roots Tour throughout April.

Salmonella Dub Start Clothing Range
Posted: Wed Jun 9, 2004 6:47 pm
There’s no need just to listen to Salmonella Dub, no soon enough you’ll be wearing a range of assorted Salmonella Dub clothing.

The Dub are not only getting into apparel, they’re off bombing the big bass grooves throughout the second leg of their Australian tour. Tiki is obviously double booked with the Concord Dawn lads but Rudeboy Savage is ably abetting on the microphone.

Also with Cornersone Roots along for the ride, frontman Brian may just jump on stage for a couple of those Salmonella sing song numbers.

Then Salmonella Dub head to Europe for a summer tour, starting off with a gig in Bristol at the Croft on June 17th.

Salmonella Dub News
Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2004 8:35 pm
Salmonella Dub are about to embark on their Aotearoa tour aptly named Longtime after the next single from the 'One Drop East' LP. They have recently celebrated their 12th birthday and have planned this next tour around smaller venues and smaller towns, effectively taking the band and you, their audience, back to their roots.

For this tour Salmonella Dub are bringing Raglan's Cornerstone Roots with them, and they will have their full range of merchandise available at the shows, including the recent additions of the Nu Steppa T Shirt design taken from the animated video of 'Nu Steppa', plus the new Salmonella Dub wristbands, trackies, trucker hats, CDs and vinyl.

The next Salmonella Dub 12" vinyl will be another Timeless Records release featuring the storming remixes of 'Nu Steppa' by DJ Digital/Nat Clarxon and 'Ez On' by Concord Dawn. Salmonella Dub are so impressed with these mixes that they are rushing out white labels for March with the release proper scheduled for April.

Australia Tour Dates:

Prince Of Wales - March 5
Universal Playground, Adelaide - March 6
Eathcore Party, Sidney Myre Music Bowl, Melbourne - March 8

Why Did Salmonella Dub Pull Out?
Posted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 8:26 pm
Salmonella Dub pulled out of the sold-out Rippon music festival at Wanaka after organisers refused to provide more than six guest passes.

Band member and manager Andrew Penman said the band should not have to pay for their partners to attend - and with 11 people in the Salmonella stage line-up these days, six passes just won't cut it.
