Raymond Sunshine - Single Review: Over and Over

08 May 2023 // A review by Kris Raven

This will be the first time I’ve heard Raymond Sunshine, their new track Over and Over came out very recently and it’s a fun 3.5 min banger with relatable life lyrics, tasty musicianship, funky artwork and a well refined sound.

The song has an upbeat vibe and a driving rhythm. The intro comes out swinging, with the snare drum rolling into town, then launching into a  really hooky guitar lead with a synth like feel (or additional real synth) pushing the song into full motion. Lead singer Jamie Martell is a great story teller, backed by bassist John Kyle who locks in with the drums and guitar, with all instruments creating moments with some shine and rhythmically sitting in each other's musical pockets. This rhythmic core exemplifies the guitar lines of Jordan Jackson, who really adds that extra flavour and colour to the song.

Over and Over has punch, a lot of drive and really well done vocal harmonies that soar and weave throughout. Having listened to the song over several listens before looking into the band themselves, I was surprised and stoked to see the drummer is lead vocalist. Not an easy feat but done by plenty of the greats.

The verses and chorus's flow natural and easily but it's the tasty guitar solo that boosts the song further. It has a sense of purpose and ends the song on an uplifting vibe, with a lot of character and feeling. The production is modern indie rock with an American surf vibe and some Australasian character. Self-produced and recorded by the band (no easy feat), it’s really well done. The mix pops, the group mentions a low fi sound and there is that aspect but it is really crisp and clear.

A solid three piece with some layers that add that extra flair, the addition of the tambourine in the outro and the vocal harmonies that float in and out seamlessly. I enjoyed this track; the songwriting and musicianship were stellar. Be sure to catch Raymond Sunshine at a show near you!
