Slow Rage - Single Review: Bones

06 Feb 2023 // A review by Kerry MB

Slow Rage is an Auckland duo who have that special something.

They are a melting pot blend of alternative rock and punk, and sound like everything you want but nothing you’ve heard.

And I’m here for it.

While they’re no strangers to the music scene, having been around for a few years now with a number of albums, EP’s and singles to their name, this is their latest single- a live version of a track called Bones.

From the moment you hit play, you are drawn into a world of damn good music and just know you won’t be going anywhere for the next 3.10.

Opening with an enormous sound that assaults your ears- cymbal heavy, big John Bonham style fills and a crunchy, driving guitar riff, Bones is a confident track that shows great finesse and style.

When you think you know where its heading- think again, but trust me you’ll love it.

There is melody, catchy verses, chaotic riffs that weave then stop and start before being replaced by something else. There is a energy and talent reminiscent of Primus but, Slow Rage have craved out their own unique sound and it’s badass.

What a tune, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Napoleon Baby is a one man musician creating timeless but solid art in the form of their debut single, (Jessica) To Barcelona from their forthcoming debut album. Upon first listen, there are a few things this single remind me of personally; The Doors meet The Beatles with a generous helping of The Beach Boys.
