Sex Dad - Album Review: Sex Dad's Greatest Hits: The Very Best Of Sex Dad

27 Dec 2022 // A review by Paul Goddard

Feeling bloated and underwhelmed.

Listening to mainstream radio in the car as I left my phone at home. Understandable then.

Feeling a bit pissed off and angry as well. 54 years old, living in the UK under Tory rule. Understandable then.

Not expecting much from the world in general as the background noise of yet another over-excited radio DJ works (sic) himself into a climax over god knows what dull drivel that has been on repeat for what seems like hours (actually about 3 mins).

Back home now. Headphones on and about to listen to the brilliantly titled but totally ungoogleable Sex Dad's greatest hits.

Oh wow. There is no foreplay This little beauty just cracks straight on in. Manifesto shows clear intent. An acerbic rant that sits somewhere between the shouty chest stomp of Idles and the tongue-in-cheek observational nursery rhyme poetry of Yard Act.

Now I am excited and we have only been going for a little over two minutes.

It's the little things that make all the difference, those short moments that can turn something throwaway into something that buries itself deep into the psyche. 13 words that will stick with me as one of the most memorable lyrics of 2022 "Jazz hands and a pink flamingo forget about John, Paul, George and Ringo"

Sex Dad clearly don't give a shit what people think but that clarity of purpose, statement of intent, is what makes this experience even more exciting.

Lasers are set to stun in Police State with lyrics that will anger some, titillate others, and be misconstrued by most. Just over 6 minutes gone and now my heart is racing and my previous grimace from the daily grind of life is beginning to dissipate into a smile.

3 more tunes and this is really starting to hit the spot. Spiky, pulsating, barbed genius delivered in just over 3 minutes leaving me in a state of bliss but wanting more, and then it finally hits, swirling feedback, driving, snapping drums pummel me into submission.

Just 11 minutes from meeting and it is all over.

I am transformed.

No longer bitter and angry just sitting back peacefully in the knowledge that I am not alone in my feelings toward the world.

This is why music is so important. With bands like Sex Dad who don't give a shit what people think we can find the clarity and connection that is completely missing in the soulless sales-driven shite, we are force-fed all day every day.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )

About Sex Dad

Sad, middle-aged folk musicians, tired of trying to get taken seriously, predictably release their frustration via the creation of a cathartic, DIY old-school angry punk record.

Signature tune is corporate office Rambo parody "Buzzword Bingo".

Sitting here in a very wet and cold, rainy UK watching the oldies falling out of the local Wetherspoons where they have been on the piss since 9am (yep the UK is weird it's only the old people who can afford to get pissed all day).I am reflecting on the past as I listen to the latest EP Made Up from Auckland-based Mark Hannington.
