Armed In Advance - Family of Strangers Tour - Armed in Advance Interview

24 Apr 2017 // An interview by jdiddynz

With the Family of Strangers NZ tour kicking off next Friday the 28th of April at the Darkroom in Christchurch, it was high time I caught up with various members of These Four Walls, Armed in Advance, and His Masters Voice to talk music, pockets, spirit animals and sausages. Here’s what went down with Armed in Advance:

Armed in Advance - Hugh Hokopaura, JP Caroll, and Ryan Thomas

Hi guys. How are we?

G'day, Amazing thanks

You guys recently completed a NZ tour, how does it feel to be back on the road again for the Family of Strangers tour?

Really great, came away from the last tour with a serious case of PTD (post tour depression) so can't wait to get out and play some shows with some awesome bands.

What are you looking forward to most on the tour?

Playing some new venues, we have never played at Darkroom in Christchurch or Totara Street in the Mount so that's always exciting and fun.

What can punters expect from the shows?

At least 3 devilishly handsome men, sweating like they've just come out of a sauna, pounding you ear drums with some sweet heavy ROCK, along with a diverse range of goodness from our other tour companions.

How have the tracks from Change/Evolve been going down with audiences?

Really awesome, having people shouting their favourite songs at you and it's only been released as a album track and not a single. It shows people have been giving the time to listen to the whole album which is greatly appreciated.

Which of the other bands are you looking forward to playing with/seeing the most?

I love all the bands, seen all of them more than once, been to a lot of Blue Ruin shows and they bring the energy and so much punk badassery, grew up on dirty rock blues so naturally His Master's Voice get me excited and I remember seeing These Four Walls for the first time years ago and couldn't believe how tight and massive the sound was, it really inspired me.

What is in your pockets right now?

Nothing. Not because my pockets are empty, more simply that I'm not wearing any pants.

Catch the tour:

Friday April 28th – Darkroom, Christchurch
Saturday April 29th – Valhalla, Wellington
Friday May 5th – Totara Street, Tauranga
Saturday May 6th – Kings Arms Tavern – Auckland

Tickets available from eventfinder

About Armed In Advance

Armed In Advance are a heavy rock trio from Auckland with a penchant for ruthlessly efficient, hard hitting post-grunge songs laced with pop sensibilities and thought provoking undertones. Hailing from Auckland, the band is made up of JP Carroll (guitar and vocals), Hugh Hokopaura (bass) and Ryan Thomas (drums).

Since starting out in 2013 under the moniker of Stitches, AIA have released an EP (Stitches EP, 2014) and a full length (Change/Evolve, 2016), and have subsequently had the honor of 5 songs gracing the NZ rock radiowaves over that time. The most recent success of rotation play for single Same Old Story on the country’s biggest rock radio station, the Rock FM, paved the way for a debut full length album described as “refreshing… modern hard rock with a point of difference.” (Muzic.net.nz)
Change/Evolve reached #9 on the NZ album charts, and was accompanied by a sold out Auckland release show. Two tracks from Change/Evolve were deemed worthy of NZ On Air funded music video grants (Same Old Story, Running You Down).

Fresh off the back of their latest EP New Ink and the release of their killer new track and video Simulate You, I had the pleasure of catching up with Waka and Kevi Metal from Tokyo Rock Machine at my local in Putney which meant good beers and good banter. Imagine the love child of Foreigner and Fall Out Boy raised by a pack of wolves with a penchant for 80’s metal riffs the TRM sound is uncompromisingly rock.
