Music News - Jackal bow out gracefully with their fifth album 'Sparkle'

that Jackal,
one of New Zealand's hardest-working young bands, have decided to call it quits
after eight years and five critically-acclaimed albums.
In the band’s own words:
“Ahoy,
After eight years and
five albums, Jackal the band, is coming to an end. We have decided to break up
the band as our guitar player, Will, is moving to America in a couple of
months. As a band, we have agreed it is best to not continue without him.
We have great pride in
the work we have done and each member has always put the music first and that's
why we have been able to work together for so long. We're glad the band is
ending on such good terms with the possibility of us working together in the
future…

Jackal formed in late 2006 when brothers Will (on drums) and Theo
McGrath (on guitar and vocals) joined up with local bassist Alec Cummins. They
began writing their own material immediately, setting out to meld a raw
punk/alternative sound, inspired by bands such as Dinosaur Jr, with
their love of Black
Sabbath and ‘70s hard rock. Over their eight years
together they have continued to experiment with and expand what is expected of
a rock band, and in the process they’ve built up a hugely loyal following.
They have just released their fifth album Sparkle, and it’s a grand finale
for a very fine band. Covering a huge range of bases – alternative, funk metal,
hard rock, and psychedelic – the album has already received a five star review. Muzic.net.nz says (amongst other glowing things): “This review
could be reduced to three words; “Awesome, Five Stars.” That should be enough
of an introduction, description and summary of Jackal’s
best album to date.”

Bandcamp.
Jackal have two final shows to play before they part ways – one at the venue they've
called home, UFO in West Auckland’s New Lynn, and their last show ever in Mt
Maunganui on May 23.
