Indie-pop artist Luna Shadows reveals ethereal new single 'nudes', with emotive video

Critically acclaimed US-NZ artist Luna Shadows has today unveiled her expressive new indie-pop ballad nudes, from her upcoming LP bathwater (out June 21). Also out today is the visually stunning, self-directed accompanying video.

Delicate, ethereal vocals float over shimmering synths on the bed of a sparse, electronic rhythm section. nudes is hypnotic; steeped in vulnerability and expansive feeling, with Shadows explaining that “it’s a combination of despair and hope, longing and suffering, all at once.”

nudes is about the early days of infatuation and the confrontational memories that come along with new romance,” says Shadows. “The song reflects on coping with the jealousy that can appear when new romantic partners mix their memories and past experiences. Feeling poisoned by the knowledge of everyone else that came before you, ruminating to the point of unhealthy obsession.”

Co-written and produced with Bradley Hale (Now Now), the single was mixed by Beatriz Artola (NYC), mastered by Jett Galindo (LA), with additional production and engineering done by co-founder of The Naked and Famous, Thomas Powers.

Also out today is the accompanying video. Directed by Shadows and with cinematography by Haley Min Young Kreofsky (whose previous work includes Alisa Xayalith’s Devil I Know), the visuals were shot in the Sky Valley desert in California.

“My movements range from big, confident wide open gestures (with the majestic mountains behind me) to unhinged, defeated fetal positions in the sand,” says Shadows. “It kind of mirrors the emotional qualities of an unstable relationship. From running to crashing, it moves rapidly between best and worst self, creating a really visibly fluctuating emotional state.”

nudes is the fifth single to be unveiled from Shadows’ upcoming LP bathwater, which is out on June 21. It follows the release of heroine, stay mad, little rituals and witches’ brew; all of which have received local support from the likes of RNZ, ZM, Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Juice TV, Muzic.net.nz, Radio One, The Most FM, The 13th Floor and more.

Luna Shadows writes and produces out of her bedroom in LA; each song is a layered and thoughtful production, and wholly her own. Emerging in 2016, Billboard called her debut “Some of the most refreshingly soulful and haunting indie pop to come out this year.” She rapidly captured the attention of the alternative scene with early single Hallelujah California, which rose to #8 on Spotify’s US Viral Chart, and her catalog has since independently achieved 50 million streams across platforms. Shadows’ is also known for her co-production work and touring with the award-winning NZ band The Naked And Famous.
