Music News - Concert for Darfur a great success

02 October 2007 - 0 Comments

The Red Cross Concert for Darfur held at the San Francisco Bathhouse on Friday 28 September was a huge success with all tickets selling out.

Pre-sales for the concert were strong in the two days leading up to the concert, and many turned up on the night to purchase tickets at the door. People had to be turned away as the San Francisco Bathhouse met its 500 capacity.

Wellington Batucada opened the concert with a fantastic drumming sequence, starting on the street and successfully attracting the crowds. They were quickly followed by Toubab Afro Rhythmic Ensemble, Marg Layton, Former Presidents of Turkmenistan and Darren Watson. Later in the evening saw popular bands UHP, Olmecha Supreme and The Pleasures, and the evening finished with Sam Manzanza and Rhythm African Band.

San Francisco Bathhouse entertainment manager Brendan Moran was thrilled with the turnout, the success of the evening and the amount of money raised for international Red Cross activities in Darfur, Sudan.

The success of the event is shown from the fact New Zealand Red Cross raised over $5,000 which will make a huge difference for the people of Sudan, who desperately need help.

“We were overwhelmed by the support we received from the Wellington community. All the bands and musicians donated their time at no charge and the huge crowd on the night had a great time while helping us raise money for those in need in Sudan,” says event co-ordinator, Amy Dawson.

The music and poetry was well received by the crowd with party goers dancing all evening.
