Live Brazil Wellington 09 – Serious Fun
Posted: Tue Sep 29, 2009 7:06 pm
Direct from Brazil ‘Tambolelê’ are bringing driving rhythms and high energy to New Zealand for the first time to raise consciousness about the diverse culture of their South American homeland, and to inspire some serious fun.

‘Tambolelê’ is the headliner at Live Brazil Wellington 09 an annual celebration of vibrant Brazilian culture in New Zealand. Joining ‘Tambolelê’ for the festival opening in a special double concert at the Memorial Theatre in Wellington is ‘The Afro Sambas of Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes’ a multi-disciplinary song cycle of deeply spiritual and significant sambas.

Spread over three days Live Brazil Wellington 09 offers a taste of everything Brazil –musical jams, traditional cuisine, Capoeira and dance workshops, photography and short film and a market day will be on offer at The Southern Cross. A Carmen Miranda dress up party celebrating 100 years since the birth of Brazilian bombshell and starring DJ Bobby Brazuica will get people in a sexy Brazil party mood.

Formed 11 years ago, Tambolelê’s music reflects the heritage of Africans brought to Minas Gerais state in Brazil. Their rhythms, both sacred and contemporary, have never been brought to New Zealand.

The group has released three albums and played with stars of Brazilian music such as Milton Nascimento and percussion wizard Naná Vasconcelos and also work closely with underprivileged neighborhoods in Brazil. ‘Tambolelê’ will host workshops in Afro dance, music, voice and percussion during Live Brazil Wellington before performing at Queenstown Jazz Festival and Nelson and Tauranga Arts Festivals.

The ‘Afro Sambas’ is a journey of discovery into the African roots of Brazilian music based on the religion of Candomble a syncretic cult originally brought from Africa to Brazil by slaves. The concert for Live Brazil Wellington will present 11 Afro Sambas developed by Baden Powell in collaboration with poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes in 1963. Remarkable and profound, the Afro Sambas song cycle is produced and directed by Julie Bevan and features local singers such as Alda Rezende and Isa Rovo, musicians and dancers.

Live Brazil Festival 09 is sponsored by Embassy of Brazil, Musica Minas – Brazil, Creative New Zealand, Creative Communities, Radio Active, The Southern Cross and Victoria University, and is organized and inspired by Brazilian artists who have relocated to New Zealand as well as local artists who’ve embraced the rhythm and beats of Brazil.

Live Brazil Festival Music Director Alda Rezende, a resident in New Zealand for the last five years, says there’s a growing awareness and love of Brazilian culture in New Zealand, and globally.

“Whether it is capoeira on Oriental Bay, or the Batucada drummers that regularly play around Wellington people want to know more about Brazil, they sense it is special and people want a part of that.

Brazil is a country as big as a continent and we have 200 million people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. That gives Brazil an immense diversity and richness of culture and art. We have very strong cultural traditions that sustain us in our lives and that define our place in the world and also spiritually. Our unique mix of African, Indian and European blended in the tropics has produced that passion - a 500 year-old blend that’s very strong, joyful and profound. It is also about profound fun! We take having fun very seriously!”
