New Zealand Music Month
Posted: Tue Apr 27, 2004 9:47 am
RDU say no to 100% NZM week

RDU rubs up and down NZ music's leg all of May but says NO to a 100% NZ week. RDU programmer, Wammo, says "We play over 50 per cent NZ music all year round. We've trained NZ music to stand on its own two feet, we've reared it from infancy. Now we're saying fly NZ music, fly! the world awaits you!"

However, RDU is still playing the NZ music month game by presenting splendid gigs at venues around Christchurch as well as live to airs from the new C1 studio downtown . These include:

- The D1 Studio Launch with Age Pryor, The Shocking Pinks and Pots from Bulletproof as well as Dimmer at the Jetset Lounge on May 1
- Mestar at the Dux de Lux on May 6
- Lindon Puffin & Trillion presenting their Really Real Tour doco at the Dux de Lux on May 8.

NZ Music Month on Radio Control

NZ Music Month on Radio Control means at least 50 per cent Kiwi music between 7am and 8pm each day throughout the entire month. NZ Music Week, though, will be 100 per cent Kiwi music between 7am and 8pm each day while late night specialist shows will play a high proportion of kiwi sounds. On air highlights will be live recordings from twelve top Manawatu bands recorded live at The Stomach, the bands being: The High Plain Drifters, Hoopla, 7.62 Short, Halucigea, Black Pudding, Pro Drag, Cortina, Module, DJ 20/40 & MC James Kirk, Hellborne, Riot Girl and Cathedra.

To celebrate NZ Music Week craziness in the flesh, Control again presents Swamp Fest. On the 7th and 8th, eight of Palmerston Norths' finest let loose at Guv'nors Tavern. Bands include: Faker, Wall Of Silents, Stitchface, 7.62 Short, Hoopla, Reflector, Collapse and Hellborne.

NZ Music month bungy

NZ musicians will jump off Auckland’s Harbour Bridge this week to launch NZ Music Month 2004.

The official launch takes place on the eve of the fourth annual NZ Music Month, this Friday 30 April, at the new AJ Hackett Bungy Base at Westhaven Auckland.

Jordan Luck and members of The Feelers, Eight, The Have, Blindspott and Augustino will all take the 40-metre plunge off the Harbour Bridge.

“We wanted to get everyone together to celebrate what has traditionally been an outstanding month for NZ music,” says NZMM committee chair David Innes.

Goodshirt’s Rodney Fisher will perform to invited guests from the music, radio and media industries and NZ music legend Dave Dobbyn will make an official address.

“Throughout our 15 years of operation, we have continued to evolve and develop our strengths, just as New Zealand artists have grown and elevated Kiwi musical innovation on the local and global stage,” says AJ Hackett Bungy co-founder Henry van Asch. “We are thrilled to be participating in this celebration of our musical past, present and future.”

Acts confirmed for RBA NZ Music Month

Five NZ acts will get a career boost at the annual Radio Broadcasters
Association Showcase as part of NZ Music Month 2004.

Amber Claire, Adeaze, Eight, Lucid 3 and The Have will all perform to a one off captive audience of influential radio programmers and music selectors from around the country at the Carlton Hotel, 1 May 2004.

“The RBA showcase is the place to be seen,” says NZ On Air Music Manager
Brendan Smyth.

"It is a great opportunity to introduce new acts when all those radio people
from around the country are in the one place at the one time."

Past years’ performers include Brooke Fraser, P Money and Scribe, Elemeno P, Carly Binding, Anika Moa and Nesian Mystik who all went on to be commercially successful after making their RBA showcase debut.

“All the acts who have showcased early in their careers have gone on to have success at radio,” says Smyth.

Criteria for applications included current radio priority acts, ‘up and comers’ or those with a chance of making a big impact with commercial radio.
Representatives from the NZ music industry including APRA, NZ On Air and NZ Music Industry Commission selected the artists.

Traditionally, the RBA showcase kicks off NZ Music Month activities at which
radio has been at the core for the past four years.
