Free Arts/Business Workshop Hits Hamilton
Posted: Tue Mar 9, 2004 8:37 am
Enterprise culture proponents ARMS Ltd are following up the success of their free motivational workshops on arts business and marketing in Wellington by branching out to other parts of New Zealand. Free half-day workshops are being offered in Palmerston North, Wanganui, North Shore, Auckland Central, Dunedin and Christchurch – and in Hamilton on Monday 15 March.
The workshops are designed for New Zealanders wanting to boost their income and develop long-term sustainable careers in the global arts industry. The workshops are interactive using participant experiences, case studies and audience participation.

Artists attending the Wellington workshops were hugely enthusiastic. One artist said: “It would have been great to have this as part of our Professional Studies last year. I learnt more from this workshop than a whole year at ‘tec.”, while another was happy to tell us: “I told several people: ‘You MUST attend this workshop!’”

ARMS was formed to address what its founders Michael Lockhart and Mark Cubey see as the most significant problem facing the burgeoning New Zealand creative sector: the mistrust and lack of understanding of business, especially marketing.

Areas covered in the four-hour sessions include the following:

The Arts Business:
You're in business - act like it. Don't succumb to learned helplessness and the cargo culture. Plan for the future and make things happen on your own terms. Then reap the emerging opportunities in the global arts bazaar.

Sell Yourself (but not your soul):
Take control of your career and make it work for you – without compromising your creativity. Get on track for a long-term sustainable income from your art form by maximising multiple income streams, using effective marketing techniques to build those streams, and organising yourself to stay on track for the long haul.

Net/Working:
It's the 21st century, and the rules of communication, production, marketing and distribution have changed. Find out how to use technology in the connected economy to stay in touch with the people who matter, and how to market and sell yourself and your artform.

Make Some Noise:
Connect with the audiences you need. Find out how to build your brand, reputation and relationships, market and negotiate, stay in touch with your audience, and use print, radio, TV, web and street media to promote yourself to an information-saturated world.

The Hamilton workshop will be held at:
Venue: Arts Waikato, 4 Little London Lane
Date: Monday 15 March, 2004
Time: 1.00pm – 5.00pm

Workshop participation is free, but registration is required through www.arms.org.nz
