Is your band original or covers - There is a big difference when it comes to gigs

You get a gig by talking to the person at the bar in charge of booking bands or through an organization like intergalactic records who put on shows.
You make sure you invite all your friends, something that a new band should have no trouble at all doing.
You make sure you have a drummer, or if you are Ward 10 or Zspine, a drum machine.
You check if the venue promotes on the net or radio and if not you do that. You post on muzic.net, loudmouth, nzmusic.com, rock factory, craccum, 18 tracker, reaction, any other site that seems applicable... maybe also poster run the local area or hit Symonds street just outside the university with posters if you are in Auckland (though this time of year no-one is there). About 2 weeks out from the gig try to get half a dozen posters to the venue.
Set up an email list mostly of friends at the start and add to the list at gigs. try to work out special offers for people on the list. Christine White comes to mind with that, its like $20 to see her show if you're not on the list $5 if you are....
SHAMELESS PLUG WANNA JOIN THE ISHTAR LIST EMAIL ME [email protected]

You make sure you have your act down as tight as possible cause getting a first gig is easy, getting a second gig at the same venue relies on all the above
It is not exactly rocket science but it is quite a bit of work Very Happy
