OFFICIAL TIMETABLE

This is probably too late for everyone, plus I think they give you a copy at the gate anyway, but for those of us not lucky enough to be going along, you can see what you're missing out on!

Big Day Out 2006 Official Timetable

Note that the timetable goes from bottom to top too. Not sure why, but I guess that's what the organisers wanted! Google

i was kinda dissapointed with this years big day out, for multiple reasons....

* 'Cause AFI pulled out
* Blindspott sounded like shit (when they played yours truly, the singer came in off key)
*Couldn't really hear Chad from Mudvayne's singing
* The mosh pits were small compared to last years

Stand outs for me were (in no particular order)

Iggy Pop - 3rd row - that was awesome

Che Fu - the first white stripes song sounded boring, and we decided to go wandering - and found Che Fu - they did a cover of Shihad's Home Again, with the DJ playing the record for it, and then The Krates (Che Fu's backing band) and the DJ swapping for a bar each, then half a bar, then beat by beat for a bar - perfectly in time - man, THAT was awesome

Autozamm - Even though small crowd - everyone over at Blindspott for some reason (is it just me, or does anyone else find Blindspott boring??) - but despite small crowd they were awesome - good jump around Foo Fighters type rock

The Subways - from England - simple chord structures (the type you only get with the untainted creativity of youth) - the singer had a good voice - and the bass player was hot Cool

Franz Ferdinand - were as expected - jumping pop-rock - would've been better if I was in the mosh, or even in the inner circle, but was good light fun nonetheless.

Surprising were Stereogram - didn't think I'd enjoy them much, but there were a couple of songs that were good - and not just the singles - although overall the songs kinda start sounding the same after a while

Henry Rollins - he was also good - damn funny - and he convinced us to go to Iggy Pop - which was well worth it - (yes, we decided to by-pass Shihad - I'd just seen them at Wgtn Town Hall last year anyways)

Disappointments:

The Mars Volta - Ok - so only caught the last 20 mins of their set, and maybe it was better at the start, but by the time I got there, they'd transgressed into "wanky noise syndrome"

Elemeno P - don't like these guys much anyway - but they sounded bad, and looked like they shouldn't have been on the main stage (although, a little forgiven since it was their first time there)

Fat Freddys Drop - These guys would be good on a summers day with a picnic, but to watch standing at the end of the night, not the best - long intros that seemed to go no where, so we left before the rush

Well - that was a long post - anybody else thoughts on the day?

I was disappointed by FFD too, but the short-set BDO aint the place to see a band whose strengths include lengthy improvisational epics: I was surprised they played where they did, considering theyve sold something like 70,000 of their cd, they prob shoulda been mainstage, esp. the way the conv stage area had that bottle-neck trap: everyone rushed up the hill to a traffic jam and standing room only, mainstage and everyone coulda just stayed where they were.

Hey, and what was with the White Stripes "tiff"? did anyone get what was going on there? they were fair rocking for the first half, that 10 min version of joeline with those other songs in the middle were wicked and jamming, they even looked like they were having a good time, then something went down between them, the big storm-off, and then when they came back, all the versions were rushed, out of time, and just outright off-form! Someone was a naughty boy with his his ex (Jack!): broke a mutual rule or something, so 'off she went'! I had just read an article about how JW was bored with the whole thing, no fun anymore etc. so was surprised to see him improvising (fair fn jamming really!). Then I saw it (the bullshit and boredom) in the second half of their set when they came back out. It was Weird! did anyone else see it?

I'm not into that kinda house/show band thing, but the GoTeam! were downright brilliant! cool yet frenetic, great energy!

AND... How was that Black Sabbath tribute band: man they were funny!
("gimme some love down the back" - OH PLEASE!).
A great guitar sound though, the whole band (besides the drummer of course) using Jansen Bassman rigs.

and did Rollins even have a plan or was he just winging it?

my last comment is regarding what seemed to be a very bad all-round sound on the Local Produce stage... it was like the subs were blown, and the rest was clipping: not even loud, and distorted: anyone else notice?

All in all I had a good day, and its always easy to bring something down, esp. in our culture it would seem, so I say: its wicked to see Kiwis getting into festival culture!!! (supposedly (long-term history suggests) festivals don't work in NZ, but it would seem that right now, they do, what with so many going on all over the place...)

epic post - breathe in...

um, Jack White broke a guitar string and was stringing it up so thats why he was back stage for a while, Very Happy at the front so got to see everything... yea, they were quite rocking, and i loved the lights for seven nation army, their best song by far...

i really wanted to see the Go! team but Kings of Leon were on and no way was i missing them, for me, that was the best show ive ever seen, not that ive been to that many, but it was so wicked, and everyone (not emphasizing) was singing along... so cool

the Greenhornes were pretty cool, anyone like blues and rock n roll would love them, theyve got a wicked bassist but their live show wasnt too exciting... however the Subways were awesome live, funny how you can like a band and then not like them live and vice versa...

and yea, i wasnt at the local produce stage often but when i was listening to electric confectionaries, the sound mix was absolutely terrible!!!

neways, i tried to keep it short...

ciao

arrr.. so thats what happened with them (WhiteStripes), looked like some major agitation from where I was... and their 'playing' was completely different when they came back out I felt too...

No doubting that the Stooges were a highlight, sure Iggy was fantastic, but at the moment you can catch Iggy (at the top of his game it would seem) almost anywhere and everywhere, so for me the opportunity to see the guys who wrote No Fun (5 yrs before the Sex Pistols covered it) actually play No Fun was something else: and Mike Watt (ex-Minutemen) on bass was wicked! if I'm not mistaken, he's coming back with Dinosaur Jr? These guys are the same age as my dad, and I aint super young (which makes my dad not so young either): these guys are showing us all that it just dont fn matter how young you are! Making music is for life!
