'The Power of Suggestion' is a new 5 song EP from Auckland based musician Dylan Storey. Tracked at his home studio in the Waitakeres with an impressive collection of vintage guitars and amps on hand, there is an increased focus on the layering of sound and textures. The song arrangements came about whilst touring the previous album 'Out of the Soup' with a live band consisting of Scott Mason - drums, Brendan Turner - bass and Reb Fountain - guitar and backing vocals. These musicians came to feature on the recording of the EP and add their own presence to the feel of the music.
The sound is generally heavier than the previous releases due to the influence of the new recording band and the recent acquisition of several fuzz pedals. "Turning down", are not words that Mason and Turner understand so the full power of a live set was captured in the rhythm section.
The tracks are mixed by audio whizz, Ryan Prebble, who provided the perfect finishing touches; creating spatial qualities in the mix and adding ambience to make all the layers of sound sit together in a pleasing presentation.
Present as ever are Storey's general lyrical themes of ironic social commentary and philosophical meanderings. The cover image comes from a car key that is a 'Copy of a Copy' (the title of the opening track), and therefore only sometimes opens the car door. The listener can make up their own interpretation of what this could be a metaphor for…
Dylan Storey will be also be doing a small tour to support this release, playing solo, and performing songs from the past and future.
