Bury Me Low is the brainchild of Francis McManemin, whose musical depth and lyrical precision are evident on Bury Me Low's highly anticipated debut album.
McManemin's musical depth and lyrical "introspective perspective" creates a dynamic atmosphere that is rich and raw all at once. The epicenter of Bury Me Low's distinct sound is McManemin himself, who writes, visualizes and conceives it all.
McManemin's references stem directly from his south of Auckland childhood. He recalls "my first recollection of being moved musically was a child listening to children story books on cassette. In between these children's stories there were intricate snippets of folk music that, for me, bought the stories to life".
McManemin's reference points are vast and intriguing. Musically, he grew up on a diet of Tchaikovsky, old world Folk Music and artists like Nick Drake and the Celtic legends The Dubliners. On Bury Me Low's debut album, he dips easily into rich Celtic rhythms, violin sections and the sometimes mysterious twists of world folk music, easily evident on the albums one minute intro Tom Bombadil named after JR Tolkien's oft overlooked character.
"The main thing that I wanted to capture with our music is the feeling of timelessness and the old world. There is no denying that we are a musical oddity". There too are the personal and biographical reference points; brush strokes of reality and storytelling that cast a mysterious shadow over McManemin's lyrics that often deal with anxiety, alienation and a hatred of conformity. Non-conformity, for McManemin is obviously the ultimate pivot to his plot.
Having grew up in a home where anxiety was prevalent due to his father's long drawn out illness, McManemin went straight into crafting Bury Me Low's debut album just weeks after his father had died. Not the usual way to grieve, some would say. And instead of trying to emulate Nirvana and Coldplay like so many other emerging bands, he went straight into creating an album that referenced his classical and world music influences.
