Cairo Knife Fight

Bio

Cairo Knife Fight began as a solo recording project for Nick Gaffaney.

It developed during the down time from Gaffaney’s day job as drummer for some of New Zealand’s most successful artists including Fat Freddy’s Drop, Anika Moa, Goldenhorse, Dimmer and Hollie Smith. Some two years on from the first jam sessions, Cairo Knife Fight is one of the country’s most unique live acts.

With their debut album ‘Iron’ to be released in July this year, New Zealand is catching on that this is a formidable mix of talents and creative energies.

Aside from Nick Gaffaney on drums and lead vocal duties, the band features Aaron Tokona (Weta) and Sam Taylor on guitars, Richie Pickard (Dave Dobbyn) on bass and backing vocalists Roslen Langton and Kate Taylor.

This plethora of musical experience has shaped a band whose music is difficult to pin down - Cairo Knife Fight is best described as a mix of rock, soul and beats. Led by Gaffaney playing drums at the front of the stage, songs grow, twist and take unexpected turns, all with a propulsive rhythm section.

Recorded at Roundhead Studios, Gaffaney describes ‘Iron’ as “A process of identifying what we were looking for as a band and committing to it without reservation. Music that moves and challenges us will hopefully affect others the same way”.

The band’s first single ‘Iron’ has recieved extensive exposure on radio and TV with it’s music video, filmed live at Roundhead studios, being a favourite at JuiceTV, MTV and C4.

“Nick is surely well on his way to being considered an iconic Kiwi musician. ‘Iron’ is an album of depth, tension and vulnerability, each carefully-crafted song with its own finely textured atmosphere.” - Lydia Jenkin, NZ Musician

“Cairo Knife Fight is a captivating mix of rock, soul, heart and rhythm” - Vicki Anderson, The Press
