Vader Whale was formed in 1995 by two crazy Dunedin musicians now known as Octo-boy and JAH Sun. After a few gigs, members went their separate ways and Vader Whale became an acoustic guitar duo. By 1998, Octo-boy was the only remaining member, performing the songs as solo acts for six months. Vader Whale went into dormancy after it was realised Dunedin was not ready for its message.
In June 2003, wheels were set in motion once again, as the planets aligned and the cosmos began to bring about a change in the Dunedin music underground. Guided by such forces, a mysterious entity now known as Psi-man spontaneously abandoned his Ashburton lifestyle of luxury and headed south to begin the next Age of Vader Whale. His legendary pilgrimage proved he indeed had "whatever it takes".
Others were soon to follow... By January 2004, ex-Electric KAT drummer and bassist (now known as Paddyman G and The Hitch Kid, respectively) had joined the group, bringing the band to its present lineup.
With the Vader Whale crew now at full quota, the music is flowing from the far reaches of the galaxy. Of style, it could be said to style loosely conform within the genre of Experimental Space-Rock, but the uninformed are likely to try and brand it as something more comprehensible to typical earthling minds. Such things are unimportant to the band.
