Beck's New Zealand Music Month 2014 Compilation

07 Jun 2014 // A review by Peter-James Dries

Beck's NZ, the official beer of New Zealand Music Month, offers you a 12 pack for $18.99 at your local supermarket, or ten exclusive tracks from ten up-and-coming New Zealand artists for free.

Beck's - known internationally for supporting art and music - in association with Aeroplane Music Services, commissioned 10 tracks from 10 of New Zealands establish and rising stars and used those songs in their Beck's Playable Posters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAtpwfWeUfY). A sequel to their Playable Beer Bottle (http://shinelimited.co.nz/work/the-becks-edison-bottle) the Playable Poster is an interactive advertisement that uses conductive ink to play a different track at the press of a button on the poster.

The tracks from the Playable Poster are now available for everyone as the album New New Zealand Music, featuring exclusive tracks from Two Wolves, Ghost Wave, Doprah, Third3ye, Lawrence Arabia, Janine and the Mixtape, The Phoenix Foundation, Ash Graham, Little Bark, SuperVillians RMC.

This was my introduction to all but The Phoenix Foundation, though I had heard of most of the bands on the compilation. Doprah have been showing up everywhere recently, but this was my first chance to hear them in action, and the name Lawrence Arabia is a name associated with rave reviews, and from the track I see why. The bands are a cross section of different genres and styles, so there is a little bit of something for everyone. The standout track for me was Ghost Wave's Who’s Doin’ The Talkin’, as it appealed to my individual music taste, but the compilation has inspired me to investigate the back catalogue of all the bands included, just to see what I've been missing.

Whether you're a fan of the underground scene, keen to support New Zealand Music Month, or just looking for something new, you should check this out.

While the idea of a Beer brand sponsoring a bunch of Indies would have been unheard of ten years ago, this album coupled with the Beck's Sets (http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/CU1404/S00272/becks-announces-seven-nz-music-month-becks-sets.htm) provides a unique opportunity for exposure and is a showcase of New Zealand's diverse musical talent.

Yurt Party - Album Review: Yurt Party
07 Sep 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
It sure isn't summer, and this is really not the Balkans, but Yurt Party’s new self-titled album refutes that. Back with another one of them Balkan rocking beats, Yurt Party’s debut is jazzy, erratic, and full of zest and energetic grooves, with flavour notes of ska, dub, and bergamot.

The New Existentialists - Single Review: Invocation
16 Jul 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
The New Existentialists, a doom metal band known for their dark and atmospheric soundscapes, have just… Wait a minute… No. The New Existentialists are really not a doom metal band, and they’re really not known for their dark soundscapes… They’re more known as stalwarts of a bygone era.

Samuel Philip Cooper - Album Review: Journey to Sobriety
01 Jun 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
Samuel Philip Cooper sits on the brink of social media stardom, with videos of his belting out pop music piano covers from behind a pair of thick spectacles racking up views and likes on Insta. Little do any of the mindless doom scrollers swiping through his reels know, but percolating behind his eye brows is the very key to their very salvation.
