Leeches - Self Titled Debut EP

17 Apr 2011 // A review by River
I had a feeling I would like this CD, even before I put it in the machine and I was not disappointed. There’s something very impressive about the self-titled release by the Leeches with its hardcore, raw quality that will knock your socks off.

At times the Leeches use slower melodic dynamics to great effect but mainly the music revolves around an unrelenting punk rock style that smashes it and is bound to get the mosh pit slamming. The Leeches effectively add to a tried and true format with dissonant surfer punk rock moments that create depth and tension. Their technique is similar to early Californian bands like Rocket From the Crypt and Agent Orange. There’s nothing typical about this release though, with only slight touches of Americanism to what is a brutally awesome New Zealand debut EP. The song Payback’s a Bitch is my favourite with the guitar arrangements in Never Forget and Already Dead particularly effective. All five-tracks are equally great and likely to find some converts to the genre.

You might expect a somewhat commercialised product considering the band members former success in the Bleeders, Antagonist A.D, Brick vs Face and Goodnight Nurse. However this is not what the music focuses on, even though they draw on all the best elements from the bands they previously represented. These young fellas exhibit an excellent example of what punk rock music is all about; couple this with great production and packaging and you’ve got yourself a winner. With a comprehensive display of musical ability and cohesive arrangements underscored with a fuck the establishment attitude, this CD is a must have for any punk rock afficionado.

Leeches debut is a short but sweet EP well within the realms of best punk releases worldwide.

About Leeches

Leeches was formed in March 2010 when members of now defunct Bleeders Angelo and Ian returned home from Canada. Wanted to do somthing new musically but somthing still a little familiar they have returned to their roots with a vision of the melodic Punk/Hardcore crossover that had been so successfull in their past. They recruited current band members Sam Crocker (Antagonist A.D), Little Dan (Brick vs Face, Die Alone) and Jaden (Goodnight Nurse) to get the ball rolling.

Since starting the writing process, Jaden's hectic schedule has meant Ben (The Chase) has had to step in to play drums at the current time. July 2010 see's Leeches play their first shows on the Antagonist A.D Winter tour of NZ.

Leeches hope to bring the frantic and raw live energy that is missing so bad right now back into the Nz music scene.

Osmium - The Misery Harvest Album Review
29 Jan 2013 // by River
There’s no escaping Osmium’s awesome metal prowess throughout their second full-length album The Misery Harvest. Stylistically similar to Alice and Chains, what sets the Invercargill based three-piece apart is a harder edge of heavy riffs with a bit more grunge for good measure.

Villainy - Mode. Set. Clear. Album Review
29 Dec 2012 // by River
The first thing to strike you about Villainy’s debut album Mode Set Clear is the excellent surrealistic graphics designed by legendary designer Storm Thorgerson. Echoing some other great works by the renowned artist such as Muse’s Absolution, Megadeth’s Rude Awakening and Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, the digipac is so good it’s worth framing and mounting to the wall.

Depths - Resurgence EP Review
23 May 2012 // by River
Released on Deadboy Records and best described as a cross between Meshuggah and As I Lay Dying with hints of Machine Head thrown into the bubbling cauldron for good measure, Depths' EP Resurgence is sure to quench your desire for head banging mayhem. The CD starts off with a nice atmospheric and spooky intro that soon gives way to Age Of Compromise.

Arc of Ascent - The Higher Key Album Review

Arc Of Ascent’s latest release The Higher Key is an excellent follow-up to their debut album Circle of the Sun (Astral Projection) that received favourable reviews. Hailing from Hamilton, the trio punches well above their weight and epitomizes the wall of sound technique with one of the most commanding and transcending metal albums so far this year.

The Heavy Metal Ninjas, who formed in 2010 (the year of the ninja), have certainly transcended the mortal realm with their debut EP of the same name.
