Vox Venus Release Debut Single

28 November 2019 - 0 Comments

Tamaki Makaurau two-piece Vox Venus have released their debut single, an adorable bop of a track named Cheesy Song of Broken Hearts, ahead of their upcoming EP Rise & Shine.

Recorded at her house in Te Henga with Coro Sonic Lab’s Matt Sephton and featuring backing vocals from Jocee Tuck and drums from Geoff ‘Paddy’ Bolton, Cheesy Song of Broken Hearts was born from front-woman Heather Bolton’s own experience with a long-term relationship of unlove, but despite its subject matter, the track positively oozes joyfulness and humour, which Heather says acted as a remedy and a re-establishment of her sense of self.

Towards the end of the relationship, an image of broken clockwork trying to tick kept coming through. Maybe it’s a common experience, to keep existing in a relationship even though your heart is thoroughly broken. The chorus came into my mind fully formed, and I thought “I can’t write that, it’s way too cheesy!” But then I gave in and went with it, hence the name.

The song was a way for me to articulate and name what I felt during that time, and to claim my own truth. and there’s a feeling of liberation, of free expression, which had been shut down within that relationship. Also in the process of writing this song I learned to trust the musical ideas that come through. Even if they sound cheesy to me - in fact especially if they do - they might have value so follow them” - Heather Bolton

They’ll be celebrating their single release accompanied by new drummer Hannah de Koster at Morningside’s 605, with support from folk-punk duo Cricket Farm on December 1st. Tickets available from Under The Radar.
