In 2018 Paul Bosauder introduced Australasia to his debut flamenco guitar album Tierra y Mar, playing sold out concerts in Auckland, Wellington and Nelson. The album, released through Southbound Records, reached #1 on the NZ Independent Album charts across all genres.
This year Paul’s back, accompanied not only by a singer and percussionist, but also an outstanding flamenco dancer. And they’re taking this vibrant and moving experience on the road throughout the country from Waiheke to Queenstown.
Paul is in many respects a cultural ambassador, performing around the world as a highly-regarded flamenco guitarist and composer, promoting his love of this music as well as his love for his country of origin – New Zealand.
He has fine-tuned his craft over the past ten years living, working and creating with Spain’s elite flamenco artists, garnering respect for his authenticity. He also received Matricula de Honor (the highest mark possible) while completing his studies at ESMUC (Escuela Superior de Musica de Cataluña).
Award-winning Spanish flamenco guitarist and producer Alberto Lopez finds Paul to be “a sensitive and emotive performer with a deep understanding of flamenco music. His compositions are original and full of personality but still respectful to the traditions and building blocks of true flamenco music”.
While in a review in Flamenco Magazine of Paul’s 2018 performance in Sevilla, Norberto Torres Cortes, commented "Paul is breaking down geographic boundaries to remind us that flamenco belongs to all of us. His music and playing projects an unrivaled artistic personality".
Paul’s emergence on stages as a soloist has enabled him to capture the essence of Spanish music and dance, combining traditional and innovative flamenco elements to create a truly moving and emotive performance. Each note, crafted and formed with flamenco emotion, recreates Spanish landscapes through sound (Paisajes sonoros).
“Flamenco is a language and music that developed in communities… el pueblo, just like blues and jazz,” Paul explains. “If you know how to play, to accompany dance and song then the audience will accept you, even admire you. There is a huge range of styles and tastes within Spain, but flamenco is a live music where young people strive to play, sing and dance the best they possibly can.
Paul has performed on an international level in Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, France, Lebanon, UK, Mexico, USA and New Zealand.
Recent international performances include the Q Theatre (Auckland), Circa Theatre (Wellington). V Festival of Concert Guitar in Barcelona; the JazzSi Club; Fringe Festival Torroella de Montgrí, Palau Robert, El Auditori, Auditori AXA, Auditori Sant Marti, Los Tarantos (all in Barcelona), Orillas de Triana, Labarinto Art-Lab, Teatro Casala (Sevilla), Jazz Foundation (Mexico) and the Saint-Georges 8a Guitar festival (Belgium) and Music Hall(Beirut).
