Savage reveals hard-hitting music video

13 November 2019 - 0 Comments

Hip-hop legend Savage has released a hard-hitting music video for his new single Reach Out (Love Don’t Live Here Anymore) depicting his battles as a young and angry teenager from a broken home. But also shining a light on the positive power of music in his life.

The poignant and powerful song Reach Out (Love Don’t Live Here Anymore) was written by Savage as a tribute to his niece who lost her battle with mental illness to suicide last year. It made its debut on World Mental Health Day.

Now Savage has revealed a fitting video, which he directed himself. He also gathered a team of creatives from the Manurewa community to be involved.

Savage, who hails from South Auckland, explains that the video is a visual representation of his life growing up - a troubled teen from a broken home, with no role models or influential people in his life.

“I was raised by my sister because my parents were absent, my brother had left us to live at Wesley College. I had just been kicked out of two high schools and had no one but my boys on the streets. With no role models or influential people in my life, I rebelled and got arrested so much that my sister had finally had enough and kicked me out,” he says.

Savage says being an angry young teenager who had lost his way, he reached a very dark place. “After exhausting my chances of sleeping on friends couches, floors, cars etc. I found myself having to take shelter under a bridge in the middle of winter. One day by chance my brother managed to convince his principal to allow me to attend and board there full-time at Wesley College and it is at this school where my life completely changed for the better and is where I found my love for music!”

Savage worked with a team of talented NZ musicians on Reach Out (Love Don’t Live Here Anymore), including multi-platinum Kiwi producer Willstah. The song also features the incredible Tone6 - a group of six young vocalists from South Auckland. Watch Savage performing with Tone 6 at Roundhead Studio in Auckland.

Savage is one of Aotearoa’s most successful artists. Already a local legend (The Deceptikonz), his big breakthrough moment came when his song Swing was placed in a pivotal scene in the blockbuster movie Knocked Up. The song went viral and today boasts more than 23 million streams on Spotify.

Fast forward to 2014 and Joel Fletcher’s remix of Swing catapulted Savage back into the charts, reaching #2 on the ARIA Singles Chart and selling a massive 4 x Platinum in Australia. Savage then teamed up with Australian DJ Timmy Trumpet for Freaks, selling 5x Platinum in Australia, reaching #1 on the New Zealand charts, hitting the top 20 across Europe and reaching half a billion streams.

2017 saw Savage’s collaboration with Kronic and Far East Movement, Push, taking over screens around the world in the trailer for the movie Fast & Furious 8 The Fate of the Furious, which was premiered during the Superbowl; another blockbuster moment for Savage.
