Anxiety Club Punctuates New EP Release With Public Service And Celebrates With Hometown Show

15 November 2019 - 0 Comments

Wellington five-piece Anxiety Club make a distinct turn in style with the punchy, indie guitar pop laden EP Francine, the follow-up release to last year’s acclaimed Black Heart EP.

Francine delivers 3 tracks of pure guitar-driven delight. Lead single Public Service paints an observational tale of the 9 to 5 grind with all the bristling energy and attitude of a long-lost New Wave gem. Working for the man has never sounded so good. EP namesake Francine is a song for anyone who has dreamed of reinvention and tells the story of a man who must grapple with his need to become the titular character. The Sun is Out begins in a dreamy state and wraps up the EP with an anthemic close.

“We had a tough job selecting the songs to record for the EP, but two new songs and one older tune gravitated together, and we couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. It was only after we’d finished recording that I realised that these songs together tell a story of sorts (is there such a thing as a “concept EP”?). The EP opens with a frustrated public servant in Public Service, which is followed by the transformative tale of Francine, and the set closes with The Sun is Out which is all about finding peace and moving on really” - Kev Fitzsimons, Anxiety Club lead-singer and chief-songwriter

The EP was recorded with the band in hot form, straight off the back of a run of summer festival shows and a reinvigorated line-up, including the addition of Chris Armour on guitar. Recorded at Lee Prebble’s legendary Surgery Studios, the EP was engineered and mixed by frequent collaborator James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Beastwars). The tracks were mastered by UK industry stalwart Pete Maher (U2, Lana Del Ray, La La Land’s City of Stars).

Anxiety Club’s true home is the stage and they’ve toured frequently, double-billed with contemporaries including The Miltones, Adam Hattaway & The Haunters and OrangeFarm. They’ve also chalked up acclaimed performances at numerous New Zealand festivals and events, from Coastella and New Plymouth’s TSB Festival of Lights, to playing at Gardens Magic in Wellington.

With the love of live performance in their blood, it’s only natural that the band will celebrate the release of the Francine EP with a special show at Caroline in Wellington on Saturday 14 December. The five piece will also kick off 2020 with a return trip to New Plymouth's Pukekura Park to perform at the Festival of Lights on Thursday 2 January 2020.

Anxiety Club’s Francine EP releases Friday 15 November and will be available through Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and wherever great music can be found.

“I really liked these songs” – Simon Sweetman on Black Heart

“An instant Americana classic” – ChillfIltr on Black Heart closer, Love Rescue Me

“Lyrically sharper than a butcher’s favourite knife, and musically gets into your psyche like sand in your togs.” 5 stars - Muzic.net.nz on Ginger in the Summer
