Dead Little Penny Release Debut Album – 'Urge Surfing'

13 November 2019 - 0 Comments

Following the release of their lush, textural and caustic singles Honeycomb, U 4 Me and Dead Together, Dead Little Penny finally reveal their long-awaited 9-track debut album, Urge Surfing.

Named after a psychological technique used to avoid acting on compulsive/impulsive behaviours such as addictions and eating disorders (to name two of many), Urge Surfing delves deep into mental health issues, self-reflection, nihilism and sometimes even love.

The album combines elements of dream-pop, shoegaze, grunge, punk and noise to create an often intense sonic landscape, drawing the listener into often dark but catchy melodies in tracks about self-exploriation (Honeycomb, U 4 Me), and pulling them back with the sarcasm, facetiousness and brattiness of Talk Show Goth, Depression and Dead Together.

Speaking of the inspiration behind the album, frontwoman Hayley Smith says, “Writing and recording this album was quite a toil. It took about three times longer than we’d intended, not only because of the writing and re-writing, but because as a whole it’s pretty personal to me.

The past few years of my life have been a real journey – learning about myself, growing, sometimes faltering, and I’ve really been looking inward and trying to move forward towards a better quality of life. For me, Urge Surfing explores my own mental health battles – specifically thoughts I have, stages I go through, and the waves, ebbs and flows that come with that”.

Comprised of members Hayley Smith, Simon Buxton and Sean Martin-Buss, the three piece create a soundscape of noisy textures, fizzing guitars and ambient synth with catchy fuzz-pop melodies. Their previous tracks, Honeycomb, U 4 Me and Depression have seen the band receive number one singles across alternative radio, pop up in the official NZ charts, and become a favourite on the local shoegaze/alternative scene playing at The Others Way, Music In Parks and Milk & Honey Festival.

They'll be celebrating the release of their album at The Wine Cellar on November 15th with support from Creme Jean and The Feastie Boys. Tickets on sale from Under The Radar from October 9th.

"... a soundscape of sweet lo-fi pop/rock, layering lush lyrics with abrasive punk" - Sniffers

"You know how Australians are always claiming New Zealand artists as their own? Well, can we claim Dead Little Penny while we're at it too?" - Happy Mag

"The trio... pummel the listener with a dense wall of reverb-heavy guitar and pounding drums. Some classic alternative rock licks break through the wall of joyous noise at times, inviting favourable comparisons with Jesus and Mary Chain, Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth" – Analogue Trash

"Maybe Dead Little Penny is here to signal a new round of good taste, or maybe it’s just a reminder that there still are great bands out there who can master a dirty sound with pleasant melodies without seeming to be too full of themselves" – We Love LoFi
