Paris-born; New York-based rapper Bas will be supported by Melodownz for his New Zealand shows at Studio The Venue in Auckland on Wednesday, October 16; and by upcoming Wellington act Will McClean and DJ Dam-G at Meow Bar in Wellington on Thursday, October 17.

Bas’ shows follow the release of his latest EP Spilled Milk Vol 1 which includes collabs with JID, Ari Lennox and Earthgang.

Hailing from West Auckland, Melodownz has made a name for himself as an urban poet, MC and rapper. Melo has a unique take on rap, with a distinctive flow and delivery that can switch from hard hitting bars to soft, melodic hooks, painting a picture in motion with his storytelling techniques and poetic lyricism.

Melodownz’s critically-acclaimed debut EP Avontales was released in July 2017. He’s also sold out nationwide tours playing the biggest festivals in his country such as Northern Bass, Rhythm and Vines and Laneway festival. He has opened for international artists such as Joey BadA$$, Anderson.Paak, The Underachievers, Flatbush Zombies, YG, Buddy, RL Grime and many more.

You can also catch Melodownz this summer at Hip Hop in the Park in Mount Maunganui on October 23 and Soundsplash in Raglan and Timaru on January 17, 18 and 19.

Born and raised with the perfect balance of city and coastal living, Will McClean has been grinding in a dark basement working out his place in this world with the help of a pen and some words. His debut EP arrived in June 2019 and his follow up EP is set to be released before the year ends. Working on various projects and events, McClean is crunching the numbers to find out what works best for him in the Wellington Hip Hop scene and beyond.

Joining McClean in Wellington is acclaimed DJ Dam-G. Over the past 10 years, Dam-G has been a regular presence on the Wellington and Auckland DJ circuits. In that time he has held residencies at Ostro, Havana, Chow and Bedford Soda and Liquor. Outside of regular gigs, he's also opened up for the likes of Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan), Sampha, Run The Jewels, Majid Jordan, Vince Staples, Schoolboy Q, Tokimonsta and Nas as well as local headliners @Peace, Home Brew, David Dallas and DJ Mu (Fat Freddy's Drop).

The son of Sudanese parents, Bas was raised in Paris until the age of eight, when his family moved to Jamaica, Queens. He didn’t start rapping until 2010, and that was on a lark, after he was coerced by a friend.

Touring with Cole fostered the fledgling rapper’s development as a performer, while project releases such as Quarter Quarter Water Raised Me II, Last Winter and Too High To Riot elevated his profile.

Bas’ new EP has been met with critical acclaim from the likes of Exclaim:

Bas's latest release is a fresh batch of tracks that'll quench your thirst for smooth, subdued, immersive rap”

He achieved his first RIAA Gold Certified single with the hit record Tribe. More recently, he contributed to Cole’s latest project Revenge Of The Dreamers III, which received strong praise from Pitchfork and includes appearances from the likes of Vince Staples, Ty Dolla $ign, T.I., Mez, Reason and Smino. Bas features on four tracks Down Bad, Don’t Hit Me Right Now, Self Love and Costa Rica.
