Kiwi post-punk outfit Spawts release their debut album AVI (pron. AV-one), out now on all streaming platforms. Featuring recently released singles Piss In The Wind, Fairy Tales, Blue Light Devil and Heresy, AVI sees Kieran Ormandy (guitar/vocals) and Jamie Hannah (drums) plunging into darker themes and textures backed by thrashing electric guitars, propulsive rhythms and infectious melodies.

Explosive opening track Brain Cells sees Hannah setting a thundering tempo alongside Ormandy’s emphatic vocal delivery, as they plummet into the album’s first single Blue Light Devil. Melodic guitar lines are supported by a driving rhythm in this metaphor-laden track, as waves of dissonance in the chorus throw listeners into an exhilarating deep dive, exposing a toxic underside to the age of modern digital media consumption.
Spawts bring whimsical subject matter to an epic climax in Fairy Tales, leading into the existential Cosmic Exit as gang vocals sing out in to the astral void. Acoustic-guitar driven track Sunnyside sees optimism transform in a weighty, discordant breakdown.
Straight-talking single Piss In The Wind epitomises the signature ‘melodic grunge’ sound pushing through in AVI, as Hannah’s zealous drum feel compounds the momentum. Closing track Inside The Same sees Spawts come up for air, in a melodic, elevating conclusion to this impassioned, multi-faceted debut.
AVI was written in what could only be described as a damp, dismal flat in the outskirts of Auckland’s central suburbs - Ormandy and Hannah would plug in and drown out, in the process writing an album that sees Spawts at their loudest, most outspoken and deeply discerning.
Spawts will be touring New Zealand during September to celebrate the release of AVI.
Arriving off the back of two previously released EP’s (Spawts and Big Fresh Corner, Milky Way), as well as the 2017 split single EP with Two Cartoons (Two Cartoons vs. Spawts), AVI carries the undercurrents of a band who are truly coming in to their own.
