Music News - An Evening with Devin Townsend

An Evening with Devin Townsend

05 June 2019 - 0 Comments

Plus1 Touring is proud to present Canadian progressive rock and metal visionary artist, Devin Townsend on the New Zealand leg of his all-acoustic tour ‘An Evening With Devin Townsend’ this September.

Set in the ambient, intimate setting of Auckland’s beloved Hollywood Avondale on September 6, the show will feature music from Townsend’s lengthily back catalogue, along with a Q&A session where fans have the opportunity to ask the internationally acclaimed, multi-instrumentalist about his career and new album, Empath.

A message from Devin:

Hello everyone, Devin here. I have been busy making my newest recording, EMPATH over the past year. It has been a complicated and enlightening experience in that I have gone back to my roots in terms of what my motivations are for making music, in hopes that I am able to move forward as a musician being as true as I possibly can to my motivations. The result is an album that I am exceptionally proud of, one that is uncompromised and diverse in ways that accurately represent where I'm at now at the age of 46.

Before I tour with a band again, I wanted to have the opportunity to play for you, and meet up with the people who not only have made my work possible, but inspire me to continue. In a world of computers and social media, to be stripped of all the bells and whistles is a very important step for my reintroduction to the live concert world. I truly hope you'll join me and I look forward to being the most honest I can be with you at these special shows.

See you at the shows.

Love

Devin Townsend

Over the course of Devin Townsend’s storied career, a single constant has persevered: change. As far back as Steve Vai’s Sex & Religion, which Townsend fronted, to 2001’s landmark full-length Terria to the multi-instrumentalist’s country rock outfit Casualties of Cool to his stunning album Transcendence and the recently released Ocean Machine; Live at the Ancient Roman Theatre Plovdiv, the Canadian isn’t too interested in keeping an even musical keel. To stay the proverbial course is, well, anathema. For certain, he’s far too impatient to write the same Strapping Young Lad song over and over—which is why he folded the band in 2007—and it’s likely there will never be a fourth or fifth Ziltoid album (a third if we’re lucky) because by that point he’ll be in a totally different frame of mind for galactic puppets gone awry. To understand why Townsend, consciously and subconsciously, favors change is to know the man and his music today.

After having disbanded the Devin Townsend Project earlier this year, Devin is now fully focused on this new turn in his career and is currently working on his next studio album Empath, which was released worldwide in March this year on HevyDevy Records/InsideOut Music.
