On the first day of NZ
Music month, Girls Rock, the programme empowering young aspiring female, trans
and non-binary musicians has launched a crowd-funding campaign to bring their
successful programme to Wellington this July.
Girls Rock Poneke is a holiday programme where young people can build
confidence and make great music, taking place on 8-13
July 2019 at Massey University's College of Creative Arts in Wellington.
Over one week, up to 40 participants aged 12-17 will join bands, learn an
instrument of their choice, engage in workshops, write an original song and
perform to family and friends at an end of the week showcase.
Girls Rock Poneke needs to raise $5,000 through crowd-funding to
ensure the success of the programme. The money raised will go towards ensuring
that the camp is accessible and affordable to everyone interested in coming
along. Supporters can donate now via Boosted.
With women making up only 23.8% of songwriters who belong to APRA AMCOS in New
Zealand and only 10% of the total royalty pool paid to writers, it is
still vital to support young women in music. Girls Rock! aims to address
this balance and by supporting the programme you will be empowering and
enabling a young generation of aspiring musicians to achieve their dreams.
Girls Rock! is made up of forward-thinking musicians and professionals who are
passionate about gender equality and our mentors are highly skilled musicians.
The support of the public will enable us to continue to employ excellent
mentors and provide our young people with the best experience possible.
Your donation will make a difference in empowering the lives of young
people and the future of New Zealand Music, creating more opportunities for
women, trans and non-gender conforming youth to succeed in the music industry.
Every donation is one step closer to ensuring our event happens, so please
donate today!
The first Girls Rock! Camp was founded in Portland in 2001 as a summer day
camp. Since then it has grown into an international community. The kaupapa of
Girls Rock! Aotearoa is to empower young women, transgender and gender
non-conforming youth by giving them practical skills and role models in a safe,
supportive space.
