95bFM is delighted to announce the appointment of Rachel Ashby as the station’s new Breakfast host, alongside incumbent producer Tess Barnett. The duo’s first show together begins at 7am on Monday 6 May.
General Manager Caitlin McIlhagga says that at its heart, 95bFM has always been about finding and broadcasting the best new talent - be it musicians or hosts.
“Just as we’ve often been the first station to play songs by new artists who have gone on to become massive, we’ve worked with many talented young broadcasters early in their careers, with a number going on to be considered among the country’s best.
“You’ll be hard pressed to find someone as capable, connected, enthusiastic, or as deeply entrenched in the spirit of 95bFM as Rachel Ashby. She’s an exciting talent with a bright future in broadcasting, and an obvious choice for the role.”
A fine arts and history student, Rachel will be known to 95bFM listeners from her various shows and roles at the station. She started out on reception and graveyard radio shifts in 2016 and has worked her way through the ranks, most recently hosting Sunday morning arts and culture magazine show Artbank. Packed with great music, reviews, and interviews, Rachel’s Artbank became a beloved staple of 95bFM’s weekend roster.
While hosting Artbank, 95bFM partnered with Nikon for a well-received longform interview podcast - The Wide Angle. Also hosted by Rachel, The Wide Angle allowed her to interview some of the most exciting voices in local photography.
Outside of the station, Rachel is heavily involved in community work, particularly around arts, culture, and the university. She was at the forefront of organising the fight to save the University of Auckland’s Fine Arts library and was an eloquent media spokesperson for the cause. Rachel also has worked extensively volunteering with art galleries, including working on the re-opening of the Christchurch art gallery following the 2011 earthquake.
Rachel says she's thrilled to be joining the 95bFM breakfast show. “It’s a huge privilege to be part of a station that cares so deeply about the amazing music and art that gets made here in Aotearoa. 95bFM has always been a champion of the weird and wonderful and I’m really looking forward to continuing that tradition alongside Tess, who is a brilliant producer.
“The 95bFM whānau is such a supportive and exciting community, and I can’t wait to get involved in this new role. It feels like a really important time to be working in independent media - and I’m stoked to have the chance to bring my love of local art and music to the breakfast show - it’s going to be a lot of fun!"
