The BackChat release 'Read My Mind'

24 April 2019 - 0 Comments

The BackChat's debut Single Read My Mind drops on 23 May 2019 on all digital music retailing platforms with an official music video to follow on 12th June.

Read My Mind is a nod to some of the fresher tracks in the Soul Pop scene. Showcasing a tight rhythm section, sass filled vocal lines and one hell of a chorus hook.

The BackChat is a young band emerging in the Auckland underground scene. This brand new project sees them mixing pop and rap vocals paired with a funk bass and layered chorus effects which translates into a captivating and unique sound.

Read My Mind explores the feeling of frustration caused by unfulfilled expectation in human relationships. The song serves up a sassy backlash aimed at those who undervalue others and let selfishness take over.

In the power house chorus, Bekah’s vocal lines echo in the minds of under appreciated and frustrated women as she calls out ‘you don’t just take your time, you take up all of mine’. There is a particular emphasis on the importance of valuing oneself that runs through the veins of this catchy and dynamic song, transferring a feeling of authority to the listener as the lyricist exudes feminine power and owns her dissatisfaction.

The track features a multitude of vocal styles and instrumental layers which audiences have come to know from The BackChat’s live appearances.

This piece carries a star studded cast. Recorded and produced by Tom Broome from bands such as The Miltones and Homebrew, mixed and co-produced by Morgan Allen who has worked with artists such as The Veils and Gin Wigmore, mastered by Vivek Gabriel who has worked with artists such as Strathan and Black Orange, and featuring Guy Harrison on keys /synths who is in bands such as Avantdale Bowling Club and The Miltones.

The influence of each of these New Zealand legends is quite clear and one can only hope that this collaboration will bring more of this lesser heard sound to popular radio this winter.

The BackChat looks forward to sharing ‘Read My Mind’ with the world on May 23rd, followed by a self-titled EP release across all digital music retailers to round out what is quickly becoming a fantastic debut for the mostly female band.
