Local electro-pop artist Navvy shares assured debut 'Subliminal' following Clash premiere

05 April 2019 - 0 Comments

What happens when a talented young musician steps away from her classical roots and immerses herself in Auckland’s songwriting world? You get Navvy, an electro-pop artist with the most assured and flexible voice you’ve heard in a minute. Today Navvy shares Subliminal, a reflective break-up track and utterly assured first single to introduce New Zealand to a songwriter on the rise.
Subliminal was labeled "a potent introduction" and "a divine mini-epic" by UK music magazine Clash, who premiered the track overnight.

You might feel like you’ve seen Navvy before. She’s best known by her friends and family as Phoebe Lee Jasper, and she’s been working on her solo music since she started a three year songwriting and performance degree. The training shows. She plays keys for Kiwi Spotify sensation Thomston alongside songwriting partner and Subliminal producer Wells* (John Nayley) and has also been working with Alex Wildwood.

With its joyful melodies, compelling rhythms, and heartfelt declarations, Subliminal is a fitting entry-point into Jasper’s sophisticated-yet-expressive take on synth-pop and vocal electronica. Recalling the emotional art-pop of La Roux and Robyn, Navvy’’s songs capture the red-hot intensity of feelings as they hit in the moment, and the clear-eyed reflection and contemplation of pink sunsets on summer evenings.

Navvy is a talent to be reckoned with. You’ll hear more from her, with a debut EP release planned for later this year.

Subliminal is out today on all streaming services.
