Indie-alt-folk artist Sophie Mashlan returns with an attitude-fuelled new single Not This Time.

Listen here: iTunes / Apple Music / Spotify

A hard-hitting song that lyrically holds no punches, Not This Time weaves together a driving acoustic guitar-based beat with a grungy, moody electric guitar, to create a strident anthem of retribution.

“It's about when someone screws you over and then tries to come back into your life later on but you've already told your mom and friends about them,” says Sophie. “I hold a grudge like crazy, so when people try to come back and pretend like it didn't happen, I definitely remember it!”

Sophie wrote the lyrics to Not This Time at home in the bathtub. “That’s totally weird and embarrassing,” she laughs. “But it was winter and I was quite cold and upset, so it just happened that way, I guess.”

From there “the guitar just kinda fell into - once I was out of the bath, obviously - and the song took like an hour from start to finish.”

Not This Time follows the single Let You Down, from Sophie’s upcoming full-length album out on Tuesday April 23. The album was recorded in Lyttelton with the legendary Ben Edwards, who has worked with the likes of Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Delaney Davidson and Tami Neilson.

The young Kiwi singer and songwriter’s sound is steeped in folk, but also shines with a unique and refreshing blend of indie pop. She has an impressive track record as a live performer, recently supporting renowned Californian musician Donavon Frankenreiter on his New Zealand tour, opening for the likes of Vance Joy, Graham Candy and Joshua Radin, and performing at numerous events, such as the Auckland Folk Festival.

Sophie’s next live appearance is on Sunday, March 3, supporting Eyreton Hall in Auckland. TICKETS
