Music News - Australia & New Zealand Bands Trump the World in Record Invites to SXSW

With the 240 initial artists released for SXSW Music Festival October 18, 18 Australia and eight New Zealand bands scored knockout blows with a record setting number being chosen to play March 11-17 in Austin Texas where 55 performed in 2018. Overall band announcement here.

"The AustralAsian countries have both created strong brands as kick-ass performers since 2002 when only five bands total between them played one show each. It’s due to our ‘take no prisoners at the crash barrier’ live performance history and also the promotion given by Sounds Australia over the past decade with the AUSSIE BBQ and the New Zealand Music Commission for their annual shows in Brush Park.” says Phil Tripp of SXSW. “Add to that the export might of AUSTRADE with its annual trade fair stands and live support, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) debut of the AUSTRALIAHOUSE weeklong venue through GDAY AUSTRALIA as well as the TRADENZ organisation over the years through their initiatives."
"Plus, in Australia, unlike the US and many other countries, we have State peak bodies like WAM, MUSIC SA, QMUSIC, MUSICNSW, MUSIC VIC and NT MUSIC that assist with overseas grants and logistical support along with the Australia Council. We are indeed ‘The Lucky Country’ but where luck meets timing for export success at the world’s largest musical flea market as we jokingly refer to it.”
“These are the artists whose bandleaders, labels, managers or agents wisely applied early when we opened up submissions in June and therefore got their music listened to and status evaluated for the first announcement. Over 150 other bands who applied later than these early starters are being evaluated at present for selection with applications closing October 25 and announcements of further bands and events each month.” Tripp concludes
