Wellington duo Meech Brothers release new EP, Brown Owl

02 April 2017 - 1 Comment

The Meech Brothers are proud to present their third EP, Brown Owl - a darker, moodier flipside to their mostly cheerful sophomore release, Poco.

Dialling back the production just a tad from that last outing, the core elements remain intact; an acoustic guitar and piano underpin it all, while more synthetic and electric visitors weave in, out and through the songs. Drifting on top of this, they sing and ruminate on the disorientation of being lost, and the joy of being found.

Brown Owl was recorded mostly in Clint’s study with some parts of the EP’s centrepiece, Diving Bell coming from sessions that took place towards the end of their tenure at the Toi Poneke Arts Centre in Wellington. Final aural enhancements were provided by Chris Winter (Eb & Sparrow) at the Mastering stage.

Artwork and photography duties were taken care of by long-time friend, graphic designer, and early musical collaborator (way back in High School), Simon Waterfield.

And that name - Brown Owl – what’s that about? It could come from the name of the suburb in Upper Hutt where Clint and Gareth grew up. Perhaps the owl represents the wisdom that comes with experience? Owls also have appalling short-distance eyesight – just like the Meech Brothers – that could definitely be it.

Brown Owl was released on 31 March 2017 and will be available to purchase as a download, or limited edition CD from their Bandcamp page. Coming to streaming services and iTunes later this year.

About the Meech Brothers

Clint and Gareth have been producing music under the Meech Brothers moniker since 2007, but their musical endeavours stretch much further back through the mists of space and time. They have toiled away in bands you have never heard of from a Rockquest Grand Final, through bar bands and pop experiments.

Now, after a long period of beavering away in the studio, they are more than keen to get out and play these songs – and songs from their earlier releases – live.

When not working on Meech Brothers material, Clint plays in Wellington bands Matt Hay & the Makers and Anxiety Club. He also played keyboards on Matt Langley’s critically acclaimed Featherbones album.
